OPERA ON THE INTERNET

WITH

DAVE  D' AGUANNO

For many opera-lovers, the big news this week is that the Met is offering a LIVE HD-transmission in area movie theatres of Massenet's "Manon" with soprano Anna Netrebko in the title role, and with tenor Piotr Beczala singing the role of her lover Des Grieux. Both singers appeared together in the first HD-transmission of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" a few seasons back, as some of you may remember.

And what opera weekend would be complete without another broadcast of Puccini's "La Boheme" ? This time, the performance comes to us from Florence (November 2011) and can be heard on the Belgian station Klara.

Handel enthusiasts get to hear "Deidamia" in a performance from this past March 27 that took place in Amsterdam.

And Wagner enthusiasts, not to be left out, have an opportunity to hear his opera "Lohengrin" as performed LIVE from Stockholm this Saturday on the Swedish radio station.

Finally, the "Obscure Opera of the Week" award goes to Auber's "The Bronze Horse" which was performed in Berlin on March 11 of this year. Perhaps one of its greatest claims to fame is that one of the scenes in the opera actually takes place on the planet Venus (!!!) -- which is to be expected, since the bronze horse of the title is able to fly into outer space carrying passengers on its back. Hey, it's not exactly "Star Trek" -- but as a comic opera, it's not as unusual as you might think, especially as compared to Wayditch's 1925 opera "The Venus Dwellers" which involves a young couple embracing and suddenly finding themselves transported to Venus -- and the opera itself is only 4 and a half hours long (!!!) -- but I digress. . .

Enjoy!
