OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

As the 2019/2020 opera season gets underway, the number of interesting items that can be enjoyed on the internet has certainly increased. In fact, tomorrow evening at 7:25, the Met is offering a FREE live audio-stream of Puccini's "Turandot." Interestingly enough, coming up on Monday (October 7), there's yet another LIVE performance of "Turandot" that can be enjoyed, this second broadcast being a LIVE performance from Barcelona.
(Thursday from the Met: www.metopera.org/)

In fact, tomorrow there are a couple of additional operatic works that are available for our listening enjoyment. One of them is a LIVE performance from Turin of Bizet's "Pearl Fishers" which can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI).

The other broadcast on Thursday is the world premiere performance of Francesco Filidei's opera "L'Inondation" ("The Flood") which comes to us from Paris on Arte Live Web, which usually indicates a video-stream rather than a regular audio presentation.

Saturday afternoon brings us broadcasts of 3 rather obscure works, one of them being one of Verdi's lesser-known operas -- "Il Corsaro" -- which can be heard in an August 24, 2019 performance from Warsaw.

Many opera-lovers are at least somewhat familiar with Dvorak's "Rusalka" (seen at the Met in recent years), but his earlier opera "King & Collier" (1871) is something of a rarity. The September 19, 2019 performance of this comic opera from Prague can be heard on Saturday.

Franz Schreker's "Die Gezeichneten" ("The Stigmatised") has been revived a few times in recent years, but opera-goers hardly ever come across his earlier opera "Der Ferne Klang" ("The Distant Sound") which he completed in 1912, having worked on it for nearly an entire decade. Swedish Radio will be airing a LIVE performance from Stockholm of this work on Saturday; as it happens, it also will be given on October 19 as a video-stream, courtesy of OperaVision.

Enjoy!

DAVE
