OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

The first weekend of November brings us a few repeat broadcasts (such as Wagner's "Lohengrin" from this past summer's Bayreuth Festival -- on German Radio), but there are also a few new items that may be of interest to most opera-lovers. One of these (aside from the aforementioned "Lohengrin") would certainly appeal to Wagner enthusiasts as BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting on Saturday (Nov. 3) a recent performance from the Royal Opera House in London of "Die Walkure." Soprano Nina Stemme sings the role of Brunnhilde in that one.

On Ireland's radio station RTE Lyric FM, there's a recorded broadcast of another opera from this year's Wexford Opera Festival. While last week's "Il Bravo" by Saverio Mercadante was a prime example straight out of the bel canto era (1830s), this Saturday's offering ushers us completely into the 21st century with a performance of William Bolcom's latest opera "Dinner at Eight" (2016) which is based on the hit Broadway play (from 1932) by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber.

Aside from the virtually unknown works of Mercadante, Pacini, etc., there also happens to be an incredibly large opera work-list that can be attributed to the Croatian composer Ivan Zajc whose 1876 opera "Nikola Subic Zrinski" can be heard on Swedish Radio in a performance that took place in Zagreb on January 25 of this year. This particular opera is only one of over 20 that Zajc wrote during his lifetime, and carries the opus number 430 ! -- But that's nothing when you consider that his opus numbers extend all the way to 1202 !!!

And there's yet another Croatian opera coming up in the days ahead. Thanks to OperaVision, you can watch a LIVE video-stream on Tuesday (Nov. 6) of Jakov Gotovac's "Ero the Joker" which premiered in 1935 and which has actually been performed, since then, in every continent except Australia. This is another performance from Zagreb, and it can be accessed for several weeks beyond its Nov. 6 date.

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

The "Big News" for a certain number of opera fans is probably "The Return of Jonas Kaufmann to the Met." Well, in all seriousness, it's good to have this popular tenor appearing at the Met after an absence of a few years. Word has it that he's been suffering from a cold this week (oh, no), but that he sounded wonderful in last night's Sirius broadcast of Puccini's "La Fanciulla del West" in which he will be appearing in this coming Saturday afternoon's HD-transmission at select movie theatres. Oh, and soprano Eva-Marie Westbroek will be singing the lead role in that one!

In fact, there are 2 more videos scheduled for this Saturday, these 2 being accessible on our home computers (for those who may wish to give the "Fanciulla" HD-transmission a pass). One of these LIVE video-streams is of Saverio Mercadante's 1839 opera "Il Bravo" (a "bravo" being something like a hired assassin). The performance is coming to us as part of this year's Wexford Opera Festival which specializes in works that don't get performed very often, i.e. "Aida" and "La Boheme" won't be given at this festival any time soon. However, if you should happen to tune in to the video-stream of Mercadante's opera, you shouldn't be surprised if it sounds a lot like Donizetti and/or Bellini, with a little "early Verdi" thrown in. Plot-wise? Although this opera is based on an early novel by James Fennimore Cooper, the intricacies of the plot are so convoluted that, compared to this one, the plot of "Il Trovatore" seems a model of crystal clarity! But (of course) it's the music that counts!

The other opera video that is coming to us on Saturday is a Prague performance of Smetana's so-called "festival opera" -- "Libuse" (from 1872). This, being an OperaVision video, can be enjoyed in the weeks ahead, should you happen to miss it on Saturday.

BBC Radio 3, on the other hand, is giving us some Wagner, specifically a recent Royal Opera House performance of "Das Rheingold."

In a lighter vein, there's Kalman's 1908 operetta "Ein Herbtsmanovern" ("The Gay Hussars") which can be heard on German Radio in a LIVE performance from Giessen.

And let's not forget this week's FREE live audio-stream from the Met: tomorrow evening at 7:25 pm, it's Puccini's "Tosca" with soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and tenor Joseph Calleja as the two doomed lovers.

Enjoy!

DAVE
