OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Most internet radio stations will be carrying the LIVE performance from the Met on Saturday afternoon, this being the first of the Met's regular series of Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts for the current 2018/2019 season. The opera being heard on Saturday is Boito's "Mefistofele" which hasn't been done at the Met in quite a number of years, so fans of this opera will, no doubt, be delighted to listen in on Saturday. With tenor Michael Fabiano as Faust and soprano Angela Meade as Margherita, this should be well worth hearing!

Then on Sunday (Dec. 2), it's "Verdi Time" once again. Opera fans can either listen to the LIVE broadcast from Rome of "Rigoletto" on Radio 3 (RAI), or WATCH the LIVE video-stream from Munich of "Otello" with tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the title role.
("Rigoletto" - www.radio3.rai.it/)

"Verdi Time" continues on Tuesday (Dec. 4) when the Met offers another of its FREE live audio-streams. At 7:55 pm, a performance of "La Traviata" can be heard on the Met's website. With soprano Diana Damrau as Violetta and tenor Juan Diego Florez as Alfredo, this should be another "must" for many opera-lovers!

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

A surge of Verdi opera broadcasts highlights the internet radio schedules during the next few days, starting on Friday (Nov. 23) with a LIVE performance from Munich of his penultimate opera "Otello." Fans of tenor Jonas Kaufmann will surely be interested in hearing their favorite tenor sing the difficult and dramatic title role in this one.

Also on Friday, Radio 3 (RAI) has scheduled a LIVE performance from Venice of one of Verdi's other Shakespeare operas -- the earlier "Macbeth" with baritone Luca Salsi singing the title role, as he seems to have been doing recently in a few other productions of this opera.

Then on Saturday, a potentially interesting performance of "Rigoletto" is featured on Swedish Radio, direct from Stockholm.

A fourth Verdi opera can then be heard on Sunday. Once again, the opera in question -- "I Due Foscari" -- is being broadcast LIVE from Munich.

Well, if you'd prefer a little Handel instead, you can check out a broadcast on Saturday of his 5-act opera "Teseo" (premiered in 1713), in a performance that took place earlier this month in Vienna. This being his only opera that extends to 5 acts, perhaps I shouldn't have said "a little Handel" in the opening sentence of this paragraph!

Enjoy! -- And don't forget to "bundle up" for one of the coldest Thanksgiving Days ever!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (November 17), BBC Radio 3 continues its series of broadcasts of Wagner's Ring Cycle, as performed recently at London's Royal Opera House, with a performance of "Siegfried." Soprano Nine Stemme, once again, can be heard in the role of Brunnhilde.

There's even more Wagner on tap for this Saturday as Swedish Radio offers a broadcast of "Das Rheingold" as performed in Gothenburg.

On German Radio, Gottfried von Einem's "Der Prozess" ("The Trial") (1952) may be heard as it was performed this past August 14 in Salzburg. As the title may suggest to some listeners, this one is based on Kafka's novel.

In a lighter vein, you can abandon yourselves to the charm of one of Rossini's lesser-known one-act comic operas. This one is "Adina" (1818), and the broadcast is of a performance that took place on August 12 as part of this past summer's annual Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.

Then on Sunday, baritone Leo Nucci stars in Verdi's "Nabucco" coming to us LIVE from Paris. Nucci is, in a sense, a baritone equivalent of Placido Domingo, in that he's still singing leading roles after having made his La Scala debut all the way back in 1975!

At the same time, one of Janacek's most popular operas can be enjoyed, simply by tuning in to OperaVision for a LIVE video-stream from Brno of "The Cunning Little Vixen."

And on Tuesday (Nov. 20), soprano Patricia Racette can be heard in the title role of this same composer's "Katya Kabanova" as performed LIVE in Barcelona. It is perhaps worth noting that -- unlike "The Cunning Little Vixen" which ends on a note of hope and renewal -- "Katya" is probably the only Janacek opera that ends in total despair!

Enjoy!

DAVE
