OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
This coming
Saturday (November 17), BBC Radio 3 continues its series of broadcasts of
Wagner's Ring Cycle, as performed recently at London's Royal Opera House, with
a performance of "Siegfried." Soprano Nine Stemme, once again, can be
heard in the role of Brunnhilde.
There's even
more Wagner on tap for this Saturday as Swedish Radio offers a broadcast of
"Das Rheingold" as performed in Gothenburg.
On German
Radio, Gottfried von Einem's "Der Prozess" ("The Trial")
(1952) may be heard as it was performed this past August 14 in Salzburg. As the
title may suggest to some listeners, this one is based on Kafka's novel.
In a lighter
vein, you can abandon yourselves to the charm of one of Rossini's lesser-known
one-act comic operas. This one is "Adina" (1818), and the broadcast
is of a performance that took place on August 12 as part of this past summer's
annual Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
Then on
Sunday, baritone Leo Nucci stars in Verdi's "Nabucco" coming to us
LIVE from Paris. Nucci is, in a sense, a baritone equivalent of Placido
Domingo, in that he's still singing leading roles after having made his La
Scala debut all the way back in 1975!
At the same
time, one of Janacek's most popular operas can be enjoyed, simply by tuning in
to OperaVision for a LIVE video-stream from Brno of "The Cunning Little
Vixen."
And on
Tuesday (Nov. 20), soprano Patricia Racette can be heard in the title role of
this same composer's "Katya Kabanova" as performed LIVE in Barcelona.
It is perhaps worth noting that -- unlike "The Cunning Little Vixen"
which ends on a note of hope and renewal -- "Katya" is probably the
only Janacek opera that ends in total despair!
Enjoy!
DAVE
