Marnie
Composer
Nico Muhly unveils his second new opera for the Met with this gripping
reimagining of Winston Graham’s novel, set in the 1950s, about a beautiful,
mysterious young woman who assumes multiple identities. Director Michael Mayer
and his creative team have devised a fast-moving, cinematic world for this
exhilarating story of denial and deceit, which also inspired a film by Alfred
Hitchcock. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the enigmatic Marnie, and
baritone Christopher Maltman is the man who pursues her—with disastrous
results. Robert Spano conducts.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Fans of
contemporary opera will probably be looking forward to this coming Saturday's
offerings. Of course, many of them will already be aware of the Met's LIVE
HD-transmission at certain area movie theatres of Nico Muhly's newest opera
"Marnie." If you should happen to already be somewhat familiar with
this composer's earlier work ("Two Boys") or recently heard the free
live audio-stream of this one which the Met broadcast not long ago, you'll
pretty much know what to expect from a musical point of view. However, if you
expect this opera to closely follow in the footsteps of the Hitchcock film
which starred Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery, you may be in for a few surprises.
On the other
hand, for those who may prefer to pass on the Muhly work, you might enjoy the
broadcast on BBC Radio 3 of Mark-Anthony Turnage's "The Silver
Tassie" which actually premiered back in the year 2000. On Saturday,
however, you can listen to a LIVE broadcast of the piece, as performed in
London, with a set of cast members that did not create their roles when the
opera was first given 18 years ago.
A third
choice for fans of 21st century opera is given to us with the world premiere
broadcast of Albert Schnelzer's "Norrmalmstorgsdramat" ("The
Stockholm Syndrome"). The performance to be heard on Swedish Radio
originally took place in Mora this past July.
Most
opera-lovers are familiar with the Cav/Pag double-bill (i.e. Mascagni's
"Cavalleria Rusticana" paired with Leoncavallo's
"Pagliacci"). Well, on Saturday, you can hear a sort of alternative
double-bill as the next Wexford Festival Opera production is broadcast with a
presentation of Franco Leoni's "L'Oracolo" (1905) as it is paired
with Umberto Giordano's "Mala Vita" (1892). The latter opera is
obviously far more obscure than its composer's later "Andrea
Chenier"; and the number of opera fans who are the least bit familiar with
the Leoni opera probably heard it once upon a time when it was recorded in the
70s with Joan Sutherland, no less! In any case, the performance being aired on
Saturday was one that took place last month.
This year's
Wexford Festival also gave us a chance to hear and even watch a performance a
few weeks ago of Saverio Mercadante's "Il Bravo." Coincidentally
perhaps, this composer's "Didone Abbandonata" (1823) can be heard on
ORF (Austria) as performed this past August in Innsbruck, which begs the question:
Are we now in the midst of a Mercadante revival? Probably not, although since
the man composed more than 50 operas in his lifetime, anything is possible.
Enjoy!
