Donizetti's

La Fille du RΓ©giment

"Daughter of the Regiment"

Tenor Javier Camarena and soprano Pretty Yende team up for a feast of bel canto vocal fireworks—including the show-stopping tenor aria “Ah! Mes amis … Pour mon Γ’me,” with its nine high Cs. Alessandro Corbelli and Maurizio Muraro trade off as the comic Sergeant Sulpice, with mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe as the outlandish Marquise of Berkenfield. And in an exciting piece of casting, stage and screen icon Kathleen Turner makes her Met debut in the speaking role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp. Enrique Mazzola conducts.
World Premiere: OpΓ©ra Comique, Paris, 1840. This frothy comedy mixes humor with a rush of buoyant melody and notorious vocal challenges. The story concerns a young orphan girl raised by an army regiment as their mascot and begins at the moment of her first stirrings of love. Complications (and comedy) ensue when her true identity is discovered. The action is startlingly simple and unencumbered by intricate subplots, allowing the full charm of the characters and their virtuosic music to come across in an uninhibited way.

Duration: 2 HRS 35 MINS

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

With the amazingly gifted young soprano Pretty Yende singing the title role this coming Saturday afternoon in the Met's LIVE HD-transmission of Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment", there are bound to be plenty of opera-lovers flocking to nearby cinemas for this one. Even if you prefer to stay at home, you can listen to the performance on various internet radio stations.

If the Donizetti opera doesn't interest you, there are actually 2 Mozart opera broadcasts scheduled for Saturday afternoon which may. One of them is a broadcast of the February 22nd performance in Vienna of "Idomeneo" (on ORF) while the other one brings us a December 2018 performance of "Don Giovanni" (from Bologna) which Radio 3 (RAI) will be carrying.
("Idomeneo" - http://oe1.orf.at/)
("Don Giovanni" - www.radio3.rai.it/)

One of Handel's more popular operas -- "Rodelinda" -- can be heard in a LIVE performance from Barcelona.

If your preferences lean more towards 21st century opera, you may certainly be interested in tuning in to the January2019 performance of Jonathan Dove's newest opera "Marx in London" which can be heard on German radio, as it was performed in Bonn. Described as a "comic opera", it's probably worth mentioning that the "Marx" in the title actually refers to Karl Marx (as opposed to Groucho et al.).

In fact, there's even one more 21st century opera that is coming our way. On Tuesday (March 5), OperaVision will be showing a video-stream of Finnish composer Jaako Kuusisto's new opera "Ice" which, as one might expect, has received its world premiere in Helsinki.

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

On tap in the next few days: A little Mozart, a little Verdi, a little Puccini (but no Wagner!), & a few other items -- a mixed bag, to be sure, but certainly there's something for everyone, starting with the Thursday video-stream from Riga of a rather unique double-bill. It's Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" but, instead of being paired with Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" as it usually is, this particular LIVE performance pairs it with Italo Montemezzi's "L'Incantesimo" ("The Enchantment") -- a one-act opera that was premiered in 1943. Although Montemezzi's earlier opera "L'Amore dei Tre Re" is occasionally revived, "L'Incantesimo" is rarely heard. Written about 50 years later than the Leoncavallo opera, it inhabits basically the same sound-world. (Think Puccini, with dashes of Wagner, Debussy, & Richard Strauss thrown into the mix.) While "Pagliacci" has its tragic, brutal ending, the Montemezzi work actually ends happily, in the sense that the soprano heroine retreats into a kind of alternate reality in which winter is magically transformed into eternal springtime. And as it just so happens, she is accompanied there by her "true love" who is, of course, a tenor!

Yet another LIVE video-stream will be presented, this one on Saturday, as the Bavarian State Opera in Munich brings us a performance of Ernst Krenek's "Karl V" (1938). Opera-lovers with conservative tastes in music should probably be forewarned that this one is predominantly an atonal work.

Mozart's "Idomeneo" is also on Saturday's schedule. This LIVE performance from Madrid can be heard on Radio Clasica.

On ORF (Austria), a high-powered cast is featured in a LIVE performance from the Vienna State Opera of Puccini's "Tosca." Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, tenor Piotr Beczala, & baritone Thomas Hampson are assigned the task of providing the expected thrills.

From the Met, we have Verdi's "Rigoletto" with a cast that includes tenor Vittorio Grigolo.

Then on Sunday, some light-hearted Rossini comes to us via Radio 3 (RAI) as his comedy "L'Italiana in Algeri" can be heard, direct from Venice.

Enjoy!
