OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Starting tomorrow (Feb. 7), there's lots of opera to be heard and/or seen on the internet. Interested opera fans can certainly begin by checking out the delayed broadcast of last Sunday's performance on French Radio of "The Damnation of Faust" by Hector Berlioz. Then later in the day (7:25 pm), the Met is offering a FREE live audio-stream of Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment" with soprano Pretty Yende in the title role.

On Friday, it's time for some Herman Melville, as re-invented by British composer Benjamin Britten in his opera "Billy Budd" which is being offered as a FREE video on OperaVision. It will be coming to us, direct from Oslo. And within the next few days, this same internet service will be showing a performance of Ponchielli's "La Gioconda" beginning on Tuesday (Feb. 12). It is worth noting, however, that the Ponchielli opera (as performed in Brussels) comes with a warning regarding some sex & violence that may be uncomfortable for some viewers. (Welcome to 21st century opera productions, I guess!)
Weber's early, rarely performed opera "Peter Schmoll" (1802) is also on Friday's schedule in a performance that took place in Vienna on January 23 of this year. This can be heard on ORF (Austria).
Then on Saturday, ORF has scheduled yet another broadcast from Vienna. This time is Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" with tenor Juan Diego Florez singing the role of Edgardo.
From the Met, it's a double-bill of Tchaikovsky's final opera ("Iolanta") paired with Bartok's "Bluebeard's Castle." Soprano Sonya Yoncheva and tenor Matthew Polenzani are featured in the Tchaikovsky work.
The somewhat more familiar "Cav/Pag" double-bill is on tap on Swedish Radio, with the Mascagni & Leoncavallo operas being performed in Gothenberg.
And for those of you with a particular fondness for the operas of the 18th century, there's Vivaldi's "L'Olimpiade" (1734) which can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) in a performance from Amsterdam.
Enjoy!
DAVE
