OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

Starting tomorrow (Thursday, June 28), there are numerous opera broadcasts worth noting, one of which is the LIVE performance being transmitted on BR-Klassik of Wagner's "Parsifal" from Munich. With tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, soprano Nina Stemme as Kundry, and bass Rene Pape as Gurnemanz, you can hardly go wrong here.

Also scheduled for tomorrow is the video-stream on Opera Vision of Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann" -- this one, coming to us from Amsterdam and remaining available for viewing for the next several months.

Then on Friday, it's time for the active young soprano Sonya Yoncheva to take on the role of Imogene in Bellini's "Il Pirata." With superstars from the past, such as Maria Callas and Montserrat Caballe, having excelled in this role, Ms Yoncheva is being given the daunting task of possibly convincing us that she deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those other incredible performers. This relatively early Bellini opera can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI) in a LIVE performance from La Scala.

Saturday afternoon brings us yet another broadcast of Janacek's "From the House of the Dead." This time around it's a performance from London's Royal Opera House which can be heard on Radio 3 (BBC).

And in case you missed it the first time around, you can hear Verdi's "Don Carlos" on ORF (Austria) in a performance that took place in Paris this past October 16, with tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, Sonya Yoncheva as Elisabeth, and Elina Garanca as Eboli.

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

Mostly re-broadcasts of opera performances you may have already heard have been scheduled in the week ahead, but there are still a few "new" ones worth noting, one of which would be Saturday's airing of an April 2018 performance of Britten's rather neglected opera "Gloriana" (1953) which can be heard on Radio 3 (BBC). This particular performance took place in Madrid.

Another performance from Madrid would be the LIVE broadcast on Sunday (June 24) of Hans Werner Henze's "The Bassarids" (premiered in 1966). Based on the Euripides drama "The Bacchae" this one is a particularly violent opera in which the baritone hero (Pentheus) is killed and literally torn to pieces with his mother (Agave) ending up cradling his severed head in her arms. (Gotta love those Greek tragedies!) In any case, this one can be heard on Radio Clasica.

Another opera with a particularly violent ending -- Saint-Saens's "Samson & Dalila" in which the entire cast is killed when the walls of the temple come crashing down upon them -- can be heard on French Radio in a LIVE performance from Paris. This one -- featuring tenor Roberto Alagna as Samson -- will also be broadcast on Sunday.

After the horrors depicted in the Henze and Saint-Saens operas mentioned above, it will probably be refreshing to tune in to Radio 3 (RAI) on Tuesday (June 26) for a LIVE broadcast from Turin of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro."

Enjoy!
