This coming
Saturday (June 16), opera fans have a number of interesting broadcasts to
choose from, although operas by Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, and Mozart are rather
conspicuous by their absence. Instead, we have a rare opportunity to listen to
Gasparo Spontini's final opera -- "Agnese von Hohenstaufen" (1829) --
which appears on German Radio's schedule in a performance from Erfurt. This
opera was once "championed" by none other than soprano Montserrat
Caballe, and no wonder, since it sounds something like a cross between
Donizetti & Verdi, although Spontini's distinctive style is a tough one to
categorize (IMO).
A little
Rossini can be added to Saturday afternoon's schedule, as his opera "Mose
in Egitto" can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI) in a LIVE performance from
Naples.
Probably
Weber's most popular opera -- "Der Freischutz" -- comes to us on ORF
(Vienna) in a performance from the Vienna State Opera.
There's also
some Russian opera on hand with a performance from Glasgow of Tchaikovsky's
"Eugene Onegin" via Radio 3 (BBC).
On Radio 4
(the Netherlands), it's Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann" as performed
in Amsterdam. (Incidentally, this one can be seen in an upcoming video on
OperaVision on June 28).
In case you
missed it a few months ago, Gounod's final opera "Le Tribut de
Zamora" (as performed in Munich) gets re-broadcast, thanks to Swedish
Radio.
And believe
it or not, another Gounod opera (although NOT either "Faust" or
"Romeo & Juliette") can be seen on YouTube in a performance from
Paris that took place earlier this month. Complete with French subtitles, it's
Gounod's 2nd opera: "La Nonne Sanglante" (1854). Could we somehow be
in the midst of a Gounod revival? If so, could his operas "Sapho"
and/or "Polyeucte" turn up in the months ahead?
Enjoy!
