OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

Fans of Russian opera, fans of the music of Modest Mussorgsky, and fans of bass Ildar Abdrazakov have reason to rejoice as a LIVE performance of "Boris Godunov" from Paris is being offered tomorrow (Thursday) on Culturebox. Abdrazakov takes on the leading role in this performance which (hopefully) will be available to us here in the U.S. in a video-stream.

Saturday (June 9) is, as usual, a big day for opera-lovers, as several noteworthy opera broadcasts are on tap. One of these will, no doubt, be of special interest to those of us who once upon a time listened excitedly to the singing of legendary Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson. And so, Swedish Radio has once again dug into their archives and will be presenting the May 14, 1965 performance from Stockholm of Richard Strauss's powerful "Elektra" -- and with Ms Nilsson in the title role, the word "powerful" can hardly be regarded as an exaggeration.

On German Radio, we are given a rare opportunity to listen to the only opera which Danish composer Rued Langgaard ever composed, and it is one which he worked on from 1921 until 1930, although it was never even performed till many years after his death: "AntiKrist." This is a LIVE performance from Mainz, and it may be of interest to those who enjoy operas off-the-beaten-track that Langgaard's opera includes characters by the name of "The Mouth That Speaks Big Words" and "The Echo of the Mystery Mood." Well! Since this composer's music is essentially tonal, one need not be put off by such strangeness, but "La Boheme" it ain't!

Another 20th century work -- Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" -- gets yet another airing. This time it's a LIVE performance from Naples which can be heard on RAI Radio 3.

Perhaps coincidentally, another "Macbeth" opera is scheduled for Saturday. In this case, it's Verdi's rather well-known "Macbeth" which can be heard on Radio 3 (BBC) in a performance from London (March 2018), and yes, it's superstar-soprano Anna Netrebko who can be heard in the role of Lady Macbeth.

Enjoy!

DAVE
