OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Mostly re-broadcasts of opera performances you may have already heard have been scheduled in the week ahead, but there are still a few "new" ones worth noting, one of which would be Saturday's airing of an April 2018 performance of Britten's rather neglected opera "Gloriana" (1953) which can be heard on Radio 3 (BBC). This particular performance took place in Madrid.
Another performance from Madrid would be the LIVE broadcast on Sunday (June 24) of Hans Werner Henze's "The Bassarids" (premiered in 1966). Based on the Euripides drama "The Bacchae" this one is a particularly violent opera in which the baritone hero (Pentheus) is killed and literally torn to pieces with his mother (Agave) ending up cradling his severed head in her arms. (Gotta love those Greek tragedies!) In any case, this one can be heard on Radio Clasica.
Another opera with a particularly violent ending -- Saint-Saens's "Samson & Dalila" in which the entire cast is killed when the walls of the temple come crashing down upon them -- can be heard on French Radio in a LIVE performance from Paris. This one -- featuring tenor Roberto Alagna as Samson -- will also be broadcast on Sunday.
After the horrors depicted in the Henze and Saint-Saens operas mentioned above, it will probably be refreshing to tune in to Radio 3 (RAI) on Tuesday (June 26) for a LIVE broadcast from Turin of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro."
Enjoy!
