Samson et Dalila
When
mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna joined forces for a new
production of Carmen at the Met, the results were electrifying. Now this star
duo reunites for another sensual French opera when they open the season in the
title roles of Saint-Saëns’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila. Darko Tresnjak,
who won a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2014 for A Gentleman’s
Guide to Love & Murder, makes his Met debut directing a vivid, seductive
staging, featuring a monumental setting for the last-act Temple of Dagon, where
the hero crushes his Philistine enemies. Sir Mark Elder conducts the first new
Met production of the work in 20 years.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Opera fans
have a lot to look forward to this week, starting with Friday's LIVE video-stream
from Palermo of one of Verdi's most popular works: "Rigoletto." This
is coming to us for FREE, thanks to OperaVision.
Also on
Friday, you can catch a LIVE performance from Venice of Rossini's
"Semiramide" which can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI).
Then, at
7:55 pm on Friday evening, the Met is broadcasting a LIVE audio-stream of Nico
Muhly's "Marnie." As some of you may already know, it's based on the
same story that was made into an Alfred Hitchcock movie back in the 60s and
which starred Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery. This operatic version was
premiered recently in London and will be given an HD-transmission in a few
weeks (Nov. 10). An earlier work by this same composer -- "Two Boys"
-- was given at the Met a few years ago, as some of you may recall.
On Saturday
it's time for the LIVE HD-transmission from the Met of Saint-Saens's
"Samson & Dalila" with Roberto Alagna and Elina Garanca in the
leading roles. Fans of either of these 2 popular opera singers will not want to
miss this one!
Also on
Saturday, for those who'd prefer to listen to opera on internet radio instead,
you can catch the LIVE broadcast from the Vienna State Opera of Berlioz's
"Les Troyens" with Joyce DiDonato taking on the role of Didon and
tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Enee.
Leos
Janacek's "Jenufa" gets a LIVE broadcast from Amsterdam on Radio 4
(the Netherlands).
Plus, on
Sunday, French Radio is giving us an opportunity to hear the October 1st
performance from Paris of Meyerbeer's "Les Huguenots." This one was
scheduled to be given a video-stream earlier this month (October 4), but (in
case you tried to watch it) Those-Who-Supposedly-Know-Better decided to block
it for us opera fans here in the U.S. Well, hearing it will just have to do for
now, although there is "talk" concerning the likelihood of its being
eventually made available to all of us in DVD/Blu-Ray format.
Enjoy!
DAVE
