Natalie Dessay stars as Violetta, Verdi's heroine who gives up her wild life as a courtesan for love, but then has to give her relationship up out of love for him. Matthew Polenzani is her lover Alfredo, and Dmitri Hrovostovsky plays his father Giorgio Germont.

This coming Saturday, April 14, the Met will
be bringing us a LIVE HD-transmission of Verdi's ever-popular "La
Traviata" with Natalie Dessay singing the title role, for the first time
at the Met. This makes 2 weeks in a row that LIVE opera is being shown in area
movie theatres! (Who would have thought this would happen, even seven or eight
years ago?) Please note, however: Dessay cancelled the opening-night
performance last week due to illness. She was scheduled to sing last night in
this same role, but I don't know if she managed to do so. Hopefully, she'll be
well enough to perform this coming Saturday, as I'm sure that many opera fans
are looking forward to seeing and hearing her in this role!
Aside from the Met offering on Saturday,
there's a performance (from March 24) on Radio 4 you might want to tune in to:
Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" coming to us from Reisopera (Enschede).

There's even more Mozart on tap, with French
Radio airing a LIVE performance from Paris of another one of his masterpieces:
"Don Giovanni."

And -- while not necessarily considered a
masterpiece by those "in the know" -- Verdi's 1st opera
("Oberto") can be heard on ORF, in a performance from Paris that took
place on November 19 of last year.

"Manon" with Anna Netrebko, you have another chance to at least HEAR
her in the same role, when the Met offers another of its several LIVE
