Johannes Brahms | Ein deutsches Requiem
There is no fiery, threatening Dies Irae in this requiem, no sorrowful tone or extended grieving. Johannes Brahms set out to provide comfort, consolation, and beauty for the living — and succeeded magnificently. This is a beautiful and profoundly moving requiem, the largest work Brahms ever composed. The Providence Singers will perform Ein deutsches Requiem as guests of the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
8 p.m. Saturday, May 5,
Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Providence

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
http://www.dailymotion.com/operaliege#video=xq9acm
The link above will take you to a page where you'll be able to see a FREE video of Verdi's "La Traviata" this coming Thursday afternoon (April 26) at around 2 p.m. (I'm guessing.) It's a performance from Liege, & it stars soprano Annick Massis. If you've never seen or heard her before, you're in for a real surprise ! ! !
This coming Saturday (April 28), the Met's LIVE performance of Wagner's
"Die Walkure" can be heard on many internet radio stations. The cast
includes most of the singers who appeared in the live HD-transmission last May,
but with soprano Katarina Dalayman in the role of Brunnhilde (the role sung
last year and quite recently by Deborah Voigt).
There's actually ANOTHER "Die Walkure" on this Saturday's schedule, so if you want an alternate performance of the work, you can tune in to ORF and listen to the Vienna State Opera's performance (as heard on November 6, 2011). Again, Katarina Dalayman may be heard as Brunnhilde, but with a different supporting cast.
This week's opera being rescued from almost total obscurity is Weinberger's work from 1926 -- "Schwanda the Bagpiper" -- which was performed in Dresden this past March, and can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands).
You can actually kick off your opera weekend by tuning in to the Met's FREE live audio-stream this Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. as Janacek's "The Makropulos Case" is being performed with soprano Karita Mattila in the role of Emilia Marty. Since Mattila has often been acknowledged as one of the leading interpreters of this role (as well as other Janacek heroines), wouldn't it have been wonderful if an HD-transmission of this work could have been put on the schedule? (But we can't have everything, even though we sometimes come mighty close these days.)

Enjoy!
