Rossini's vocally dazzling comedy stars bel canto sensation Juan Diego Florez in the title role of this Met premiere production. He vies with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, in the trouser role of Isolier, for the love of the lonely Countess Adele, sung by soprano Diana Damrau. Bartlett Sher, director of the Met's hit productions of The Barber of Seville and Les Contes D'Hoffmann, describes the world of the opera as, "a place where love is dangerous. People get hurt. That can be very funny and very painful. Rossini captures both-with the most beautiful love music Rossini ever wrote."

Wagner's Dream
Part of The Ring Cycle Encores
A new documentary film by Susan
Froemke
Wagner’s Dream takes you deep into the artistic and musical challenges of the epic
work. Visionary director Robert Lepage begins a five-year journey to create the
most ambitious staging in Metropolitan Opera history, featuring a 90,000-pound
set (“The Machine”) designed to realize all of Wagner’s scenic instructions.
The film follows heroic singers from rehearsals to performance as they take on
many of the most daunting roles in opera. Soprano Deborah Voigt is torn between
excitement and fear as she prepares to play the warrior goddess Brünnhilde,
while unexpected drama arises as a new tenor, Jay Hunter Morris, steps in as
the Ring’s hero, Siegfried—days before the production’s world
premiere.

Johannes Brahms | Ein deutsches Requiem
There is no fiery, threatening Dies Irae in this requiem, no sorrowful tone or extended grieving. Johannes Brahms set out to provide comfort, consolation, and beauty for the living — and succeeded magnificently. This is a beautiful and profoundly moving requiem, the largest work Brahms ever composed. The Providence Singers will perform Ein deutsches Requiem as guests of the Rhode Island Philharmonic.

This coming Saturday (May 5), numerous
internet radio stations will be broadcasting the Met's LIVE performance of
Janacek's "The Makropoulos Case" with soprano Karita Mattila singing
the role of Emilia Marty. As many of you are probably aware, Mattila has made
Janacek heroines one of her specialties, having sung the roles of Katya
Kabanova and Jenufa to great acclaim in over a decade, and the role of Emilia
Marty was one of her triumphs last season at the San Francisco Opera.
French Radio has a performance of Puccini's
"Madame Butterfly" in a performance from Toulouse which took place on
April 20 of this year.
The Belgian station Klara is serving up
something in a decidedly lighter vein, by broadcasting this past New Year's Eve
performance in Lausanne of Offenbach's "The Grand-Duchess of
Gerolstein."
And, as of late, it seems that no weekend
would be complete without at least one Wagner extravaganza, & so ORF is
bringing us the Vienna State Opera's November 13, 2011 performance of "Die
Gotterdammerung."
The Obscure Opera of the Week? The winner,
hands-down, would be Boris Blacher's "ballet-opera" entitled
"Prussian Fairy Tales" (from 1952) which is being aired on German
Radio in a performance that was given on April 21 (Schleswig-Holstein).
Of major interest to some of you, the Met is
offering 2 free LIVE audio-streams over the course of the next 7 days:
This Friday (May 4), you can tune in to
Britten's "Billy Budd" at 7:30 p.m., & on Monday (May 7), it's
Wagner's "Die Walkure" with the same cast that was heard on last
Saturday's broadcast, except that (hopefully) tenor Jonas Kaufmann will be well
enough to sing the role of Siegmund, as scheduled.

Enjoy!
