ENCORE PRESENTATION OF MET-HD BROADCAST
at a theater near you: Jonas Kaufman in |
Faust
A new production of Gounod’s Faust,
is set by Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff (Met debut) in the first part
of the 20th century. McAnuff is interested in the opera’s
philosophies of “personal responsibility…I think that’s the Faustian journey
right there. It’s trying to escape from ultimate knowledge, which includes
evil.” Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings his first Met performances
of the title role, opposite Marina Poplavskaya as the innocent
Marguerite, Russell Braun as Valentin, and René
Pape as Méphistophélès; Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who led the
new production premieres of Carmen and Don Carlo in
recent seasons, conducts his first Met performances of the opera.
Theatrical designers Robert
Brill (sets) and Paul Tazewell (costumes) make their Met debuts
with this production, which also features lighting design by Peter
Mumford, video design by Dustin O’Neill, choreography by Kelly
Devine, and fight direction by Stephen Rankin. Faust is a
co-production of the Metropolitan Opera and the English National Opera, where
this production premiered earlier this season.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
Comparatively slim pickings this weekend, with
many radio stations offering replays of opera performances from past months,
and other stations broadcasting the Saturday afternoon LIVE performance from
the Met of Humperdinck's perennial favorite: "Hansel & Gretel."
Of primary interest to fans of Anna Netrebko,
the La Scala opening night performance (12/7/11) of Mozart's "Don
Giovanni" gets another airing, this time on Radio 4 (the Netherlands).
Netrebko takes the part of Donna Anna in that one!
Of even greater interest -- primarily for fans
of either soprano Patricia Racette, tenor Roberto Alagna, or Puccini's
"Tosca" (you all know whether you fall into any one of those
categories, or all 3 perhaps) -- on next Tuesday evening (Jan. 10) at 7:30, you
can catch the Met's LIVE performance on their free audio-stream. Simply go to
www.metopera.org & follow the links labeled "Watch & Listen"
& get ready for what will potentially be a full-blooded performance of that
opera with Racette & Alagna as the doomed lovers. (Is there any other type
of "lovers" when it comes to opera?)
Enjoy!
DAVE
