OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
Headlining this Saturday's opera offerings on internet
radio would be the audio of "The Enchanted Island" from the Met,
which is simultaneously being televised in HD in various local movie theatres.
Featuring singers Placido Domingo, Joyce Di Donato, and David Daniels (among
many others), the work is a pastiche utilizing music from various operas by
Rameau, Vivaldi, Handel, and other Baroque composers. Plot-wise, it's something
along the lines of "The Tempest" meets "A Midsummer Night's
Dream" (or vice versa). In any case, it's bound to be quite an event!
(www/wrti.org/)
On other radio stations, there are a couple of
double-bills that look quite promising. For example, German Radio will be
broadcasting a performance from Lubeck of Mascagni's "Cavalleria
Rusticana" and de Falla's "La Vida Breve." These two operas were
performed last Friday (Jan. 13).
Otherwise, you might want to check out the double-bill
being offered -- direct from Vienna -- on ORF: Tchaikovsky's
"Iolanta" and Rachmaninov's "Francesca da Rimini" -- what
many people might consider two neglected masterpieces of Russian opera.

Enjoy!
