NEXT WEEK: THE MET-HD SIMULCAST OF
Saturday, January 21, 2012, 1:00PM

THE ENCHANTED ISLAND

In one extraordinary new work, lovers of Baroque opera have it all: the world's best singers, glorious music of the Baroque masters, and a story drawn from Shakespeare. In The Enchanted Island, the lovers from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights's Dream are shipwrecked on his other-worldly island of The Tempest. Inspired by the musical pastiches and masques of the 18th century, the work showcases arias ans ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others, and a new libretto by Jeremy Sams. Eminent conductor William Christie leads an all-star cast with David Daniels (Prospero) and Joyce DiDonato (Sycorax) as the formidable foes. Placido Domingo as Neptune. Danielle de Niese as Ariel, and Luca Pisaroni as Caliban. Lisette Oropesa and Anthony Roth Costanza play Miranda and Ferdinand. The dazzling production is directed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Satyagraha and the Met's dazzling 125 anniversary gala).

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

Headlining this Saturday's opera offerings on internet radio would be the audio of "The Enchanted Island" from the Met, which is simultaneously being televised in HD in various local movie theatres. Featuring singers Placido Domingo, Joyce Di Donato, and David Daniels (among many others), the work is a pastiche utilizing music from various operas by Rameau, Vivaldi, Handel, and other Baroque composers. Plot-wise, it's something along the lines of "The Tempest" meets "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (or vice versa). In any case, it's bound to be quite an event!
(www/wrti.org/)

On other radio stations, there are a couple of double-bills that look quite promising. For example, German Radio will be broadcasting a performance from Lubeck of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and de Falla's "La Vida Breve." These two operas were performed last Friday (Jan. 13).

Otherwise, you might want to check out the double-bill being offered -- direct from Vienna -- on ORF: Tchaikovsky's "Iolanta" and Rachmaninov's "Francesca da Rimini" -- what many people might consider two neglected masterpieces of Russian opera.

Enjoy!

DAVE
