OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

Baroque Opera enthusiasts have reason to rejoice this coming Saturday (January 14) as 2 operas (both, coincidentally, from 1737) figure on internet radio schedules.

The BBC is presenting Rameau's "Castor & Pollux" -- the first performance ever done by English National Opera of an opera by Rameau.

Then on ORF ( among others), there's a LIVE performance from Vienna of Vivaldi's "L'Oracolo in Messenia." As operas by Vivaldi and Rameau don't turn up on as regular a basis as, say, Bizet's "Carmen" or Mozart's "Don Giovanni", it's a case of catch-them-when-you-can if you're at all interested in either of these composers' works.

In a more "popular" vein, there's a repeat broadcast of Rossini's "Cenerentola" ("Cinderella") as performed in Paris on the 17th of last month. This time around, it can be heard on Radio 4.

And then -- for an extra-special treat -- the Met has decided to re-broadcast the April 4, 1970, performance of Bellini's tragic masterpiece "Norma" with the incomparable Joan Sutherland in the lead. But that ain't all (as some people might put it), because super-mezzo Marilyn Horne sings the role of Adalgisa, former tenor great Carlo Bergonzi can be heard as Pollione, and the prominent bass Cesare Siepi is featured in the role of Oroveso. All I can say is: "Wow!"

A "wow" of a different sort, one might say, can be applied to next Tuesday evening's LIVE performance from the Met of Wagner's "Die Gotterdammerung" (starring Deborah Voigt as Brunnhilde). The opera begins at 6 p.m. (so, it probably won't end till some time Wednesday morning!!!) and is one of the many free audio-streams the Met offers on a weekly basis.

Enjoy!

THE ENCHANTED ISLAND

In one extraordinary new work, lovers of Baroque opera have it all: the world's best singers, glorious music of the Baroque masters, and a story drawn from Shakespeare. In The Enchanted Island, the lovers from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights's Dream are shipwrecked on his other-worldly island of The Tempest. Inspired by the musical pastiches and masques of the 18th century, the work showcases arias ans ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others, and a new libretto by Jeremy Sams. Eminent conductor William Christie leads an all-star cast with David Daniels (Prospero) and Joyce DiDonato (Sycorax) as the formidable foes. Placido Domingo as Neptune. Danielle de Niese as Ariel, and Luca Pisaroni as Caliban. Lisette Oropesa and Anthony Roth Costanza play Miranda and Ferdinand. The dazzling production is directed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Satyagraha and the Met's dazzling 125 anniversary gala).
