LA TRAVIATA

Sunday, Jan. 1, at 8PM on the WEST Coast

 by Guiseppe Verdi

For our New Year's Day SF Opera broadcast (at 8pm) we've asked SF Opera General Director David Gockley to select a personal favorite.  He has chosen the SFO production of La Traviata, set in the Jazz Age, from June of 2009 starring the stunning Russian soprano, Anna Netrebko as the tragic Violetta.and Charles Castronovo as Alfredo Germont. Some of Verdi's most memorable moments come from this heartbreaking story based on Dumas, fils' Lady of the Camelias about a beautiful courtesan who is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice for love.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

Many opera fans the world over will be tuning in to either one of two radio broadcasts on New Year's Eve of possibly the most popular operetta of all time: Johann Strauss's "Die Fledermaus" !

The Met is bringing out a performance of it that was originally broadcast on January 20, 1951. Probably the best-known singers in the cast that sang on that afternoon would be tenor Richard Tucker as Alfred and mezzo Rise Stevens as Count Orlofsky. This classic performance can be heard on several internet radio stations.

Then there's the LIVE broadcast of this Strauss perennial favorite, coming to us straight from the Vienna State Opera on ORF, and starring tenor Kurt Streit as Eisenstein.

Another operetta that ranks among the best of that particular genre would be Lehar's "Count of Luxemburg" which can be heard in a performance from Osnabruck that took place on November 26 of this year.

Glinka's "Russlan & Ludmilla" can be heard in a Bolshoi performance from November 3, on Radio 4 (the Netherlands).

Of interest to many listeners, there's Verdi's "Traviata" on BBC Radio, in a performance from London's Royal Opera House. The featured soprano is Ailyn Perez, with strong support from tenor Piotr Beczala and baritone Simon Keenlyside. Beczala sang the tenor lead in the Met's "Lucia di Lammermoor" HD-transmission opposite Anna Netrebko a few years back, and Keenlyside sang the title role in "Hamlet" (by Ambroise Thomas) -- another Met HD-transmission.

Then -- to kick off the New Year (in a manner of speaking) -- you might want to check out the Met's LIVE audiostream on Monday evening (Jan. 2, 2012) of Donizetti's delightful comedy "The Daughter of the Regiment" with the same cast which performed this work in another recent free audiostream from the Met.

May the coming New Year for everyone be a bright & happy one, filled with OPERA and other things of beauty!
