Most radio stations on the internet will be
carrying the broadcast from the Met this Saturday of Puccini's "Madame
Butterfly" with soprano Liping Zhang in the title role.
If that particular radio broadcast doesn't
interest you, you'll actually have a choice between two different operatic
treatments of the Cinderella story: "Cenerentola" (Rossini) &
"Cendrillon" (Massenet). The Rossini opera comes via French Radio in
a performance from the Paris Opera's current schedule.
Massenet's version of the Cinderella story can
be heard in a LIVE broadcast from Brussels on Belgium's Klara station.
There's more Puccini on tap this Saturday as
Swedish Radio carries a LIVE performance of "La Fanciulla del West"
direct from Stockholm.
Or how about Wagner's take on Shakespeare's
"Measure for Measure" in the 2nd opera he ever wrote: "Das
Liebesverbot" ("Forbidden Love") in a performance from Meiningen
which was given last Saturday (Dec. 10).
Then -- for those with more adventurous tastes
-- there's the World Premiere of Manfred Trojahn's opera "Orest" in
yet another operatic adaptation of that whole House of Atrius saga, possibly
the ultimate in dysfunctional families. The Netherlands Opera (Amsterdam) is
hosting this particular premiere.
Last, but certainly not least, the Met has
scheduled one more free LIVE audio-stream of Gounod's "Faust" with
the same cast that performed the work this past Saturday in the
HD-transmission. You can hear these same wonderful soloists once again LIVE on
Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 7:30.

LATE BREAKING NEWS:

Two operas from the Bavarian State Opera in
Munich are scheduled to be shown online -- for free!
On January 7, 2012, Donizetti's "L'Elisir
d'Amore" will be presented.
Then on January 22, it'll be Verdi's "Don
Carlo" starring tenor Jonas Kaufmann, who was recently seen in the Met's
HD-transmission of Gounod's "Faust" and Rene Pape as King Philip.
As I understand it, there will be more of
these in the future, depending on the success of these first two.
