Faust
A new production of Gounod’s Faust,
is set by Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff (Met debut) in the first part
of the 20th century. McAnuff is interested in the opera’s
philosophies of “personal responsibility…I think that’s the Faustian journey
right there. It’s trying to escape from ultimate knowledge, which includes
evil.” Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings his first Met performances
of the title role, opposite Marina Poplavskaya as the innocent
Marguerite, Russell Braun as Valentin, and René
Pape as Méphistophélès; Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who led the
new production premieres of Carmen and Don Carlo in
recent seasons, conducts his first Met performances of the opera.
Theatrical designers Robert
Brill (sets) and Paul Tazewell (costumes) make their Met debuts
with this production, which also features lighting design by Peter
Mumford, video design by Dustin O’Neill, choreography by Kelly
Devine, and fight direction by Stephen Rankin. Faust is a
co-production of the Metropolitan Opera and the English National Opera, where
this production premiered earlier this season.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
This coming Saturday (Dec. 10), those of you
who may not be attending the LIVE HD-transmission of Gounod's "Faust"
at area movie theatres may want to listen to the performance on many radio
stations on the internet. Starring Jonas Kaufmann, Marina Poplavskaya, and Rene
Pape, it promises to be a very exciting performance.
Today, in fact, (Wed., Dec. 7), the opening
night at La Scala (Mozart's "Don Giovanni") is being shown at the
Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport. The audio of this performance is scheduled to
be heard on ORF this Saturday. With Anna Netrebko singing the role of Donna
Anna, it would certainly be worth checking out, IMO.
In a Dec. 4, 2011, performance from the
Frankfurt Opera, comes Verdi's "Otello" which can be heard on German
Radio this Saturday.
For "modern" opera fans, there's a
recording of Andre Laporte's opera from 1985 -- "Das Schloss"
("The Castle") -- being broadcast on Belgium's Klara radio station.
It's based on the unfinished novel of the same name by Franz Kafka.
Then, on Monday (Dec. 12), the Met is offering
a free LIVE audio-stream of Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment"
with Lawrence Brownlee in the role of Tonio, with his Act 1 aria containing
nine high C's sure to be a highlight. Brownlee, as some of you may recall, sang
in two Rossini HD-transmissions from the Met: He was Prince Ramiro in
"Cenerentola" ("Cinderella") opposite Elina Garanca, and
Rinaldo in "Armida" opposite Renee Fleming.

Enjoy!
