OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

Wagner enthusiasts have cause to rejoice this Saturday (October 1) as two of the operas of his Ring cycle will be broadcast on internet radio. NPR, for example, continues its presentation of the San Francisco Opera's series of Ring operas by offering us the second opera of the cycle: "Die Walkure."

From the Reisopera (in the Netherlands) comes a LIVE performance on Radio 4 of the third opera in the cycle: "Siegfried." Which of the 2 to listen to? Decisions, decisions. . .

On the other hand, Puccini-lovers get to hear "Tosca" on BBC 3, in a performance from early this past summer when the opera was performed at Covent Garden (London), featuring what looks to be a high-powered cast: Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann, & Bryn Terfel! Plus, rumor has it that this opera and cast will be shown in selected movie theatres some time in the future. (Jane Pickens, are you listening?)

From this past May comes a Canadian Opera performance of Gluck's "Orfeo & Euridice", courtesy of CBC Radio 2.

Also, Swedish Radio is giving listeners another chance to sample Mercadante's tragic and moving "Virginia" as performed at last October's Wexford Festival, with Angela Meade singing the role of Virginia. Ms Meade will be appearing in Verdi's "Ernani" later this season when the Met transmits one of its live performances at area movie theatres (February 25).

In a lighter vein, there's "Wiener Blut" from (where else?) Vienna, since virtually no one does Johann Strauss better than the Viennese themselves, most people would agree.

Enjoy!

Die Walküre by Richard Wagner

A wounded deity comes to realize the limits of his power in the heartbreaking second installment of the cycle. Wotan, king of the gods, strives to undo the curse of the ring by fathering a pure-of-heart hero by a mortal woman. But he finds himself torn as events spin out of control and his offspring defy his will. Wotan’s deeply loving but disobedient daughter is sung by soprano Nina Stemme, who makes her cycle debut. Stemme is a performer of "fearless emotional intensity," said The New York Times. Following her performance in Die Walküre (June 2010), the San Francisco Chronicle praised Stemme as "a superb Brünnhilde, bringing buoyancy and verve to the role."

Soprano Anja Kampe "sang with prodigious grace and power" (Associated Press) as Sieglinde at Washington National Opera, and she joins tenor Brandon Jovanovich in his role debut as Siegmund. Sunday night at 8.

Follow the link to click on the audio player to hear our Dianne Nicolini chat with SF Opera's General Director David Gockley about his quest to convince Nina Stemme to play the role of Brünnhilde in this Summer's production of Wagner's Ring Cycle.
