Boston Globe
James Levine injured again
09/06/2011 12:27 PM
By Geoff Edgers, Globe Staff

James Levine, the former music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, has been forced to withdraw from his fall performances with the Metropolitan Opera after falling and damaging his vertebrae.

As a result of this latest injury, the Met has made Fabio Luisi its principal conductor and announced that he will replace Levine in new productions of Don Giovanni and Siegfried. Levine will continue as the Met’s music director, according to a press release.

The latest injury, during Levine’s vacation in Vermont, came as he was recovering from another back surgery. The fall forced him to
undergo emergency surgery in New York last Thursday.

Until Sept. 1, Levine had served at both the Met and as the BSO’s music director. But a series of injuries in recent years led to his resignation from the latter post, which he took over in 2004. The BSO is currently looking for a new music director.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

Nothing current on internet radio this coming Saturday (September 10), other than some "reruns" and/or broadcasts of performances that took place earlier this summer. Even so, there are a few items that may certainly be of interest to many opera-lovers.

One such would be a broadcast of Massenet's "Werther" in a performance from the San Francisco Opera (September 2010), featuring tenor Ramon Vargas and mezzo-soprano Alice Coote. In describing her performance in this role, one London newspaper said that "she spares nothing in emotion, vocal energy and heartbreak."

Also from September 2010 comes a performance of "Salome" (by Richard Strauss) from Goteborg, Sweden.

CBC Radio 2 has a performance of more recent vintage (May 2011) as they have scheduled a broadcast of Puccini's all-time favorite "La Boheme" in a performance that took place in Montreal.

Then -- in case you missed it the first time around -- German Radio has Janacek's tragic "Katya Kabanova" on tap in a performance by the Vienna State Opera from June 17 of this year.

Enjoy!

Italian tenor Licitra dies after scooter crash

(AFP) – 1 hour ago, September 5, 2011
ROME — Renowned Italian tenor Salvatore Licitra died overnight, a week after he suffered serious injuries to his head and chest in a road accident while on a scooter in Sicily, Italian media reported Monday.

The Swiss-born singer was not wearing a helmet, while his 29-year-old Chinese partner was protected by her helmet and suffered only light injuries.

Licitra, who was born in 1968, was to receive an award on Saturday in Ragusa where the accident happened.

The hospital in Catania where he underwent treatment confirmed that he had been brain dead and his family gave permission to donate his organs, La Repubblica neswspaper said on its website.
"My son was given the gift of the 'belcanto' which made him a great singer who was acclaimed throughout the world," his mother Paola said in a letter to the hospital.

"Those who knew him know how generous he was," she said,
adding that the donation was "for those who suffer".

The accident happened late on August 27 when Licitra lost control of his Vespa scooter near Ragusa, possibly after suffering a stroke, and crashed into a wall.

He was born in Bern, Switzerland to Sicilian emigrants and started his singing career in the northern city of Parma in 1998.
His career took off when he replaced Luciano Pavarotti at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 2002 in the role of Caravadossi in "Tosca".

Licitra sang under Riccardo Muti at Milan's La Scala and many other opera houses.
