"This is opera at its grandest and best." - Paul Levy, The Wall Street Journal Europe

Live from the Royal Opera House London:  In HD on the big screen as it is being performed in London.

Gounod's Faust was the most successful opera of its time, reaching Covent Garden in 1863, four years after its Parisian premiere, and quickly becoming a favorite of Victorian audiences. In 2004 Faust returned to The Royal Opera's repertory with a flourish: David McVicar's brilliantly theatrical production, played out in the Paris of the Second Empire, has given its familiar melodies, grand ensembles and epic central struggle between good and evil a new lease of life.

Angela Gheorghiu is singing the role of Marguerite;  Faust is tenor Vittorio Grigolo, and bass Rene Pape is singing Mephistopheles.

Opera fans who may be looking forward to the Met's LIVE HD-transmission of Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" on October 15 (starring soprano Anna Netrebko) will get a chance next Monday (September 26) at 6:30 p.m. to listen to the free LIVE audio-stream on the Met's website (www.metopera.org). Tune in at the time of the actual performance, and sit back and enjoy what will potentially be an exciting performance.

In the meantime, those of you who may be planning on heading on down to the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport next Wednesday (Sept. 28) to watch the LIVE performance from London of Gounod's "Faust" can get a good idea of what it will sound like, as BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting this opera with the same cast, on Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch station Radio 4 has a veritable blockbuster scheduled for this Saturday, as the Netherlands Opera (Amsterdam) will be performing BOTH operas of Gluck, that were based on the Greek character Iphigenie: "Iphigenie en Aulide" and (the opera he wrote 5 years later) "Iphigenie en Tauride" in a double-bill. It promises to be a LONG afternoon of opera, but that never seems to bother Wagner fans, right?

For more LIVE opera this Saturday, there's the ever-popular "Carmen" (by Bizet) which is being performed in Stockholm, and which is being aired on Swedish Radio.

Then there's a bit of Richard Strauss on tap -- "Ariadne auf Naxos" -- courtesy of the Canadian Opera Company in a performance from last May.

And in a performance from last June, NPR will be broadcasting the San Francisco Opera's recently staged "Das Rheingold" by Richard Wagner -- the first part of their Ring cycle which earned much praise by the critics.

Enjoy!
