Rossini's comic--

LE
COMTE ORY

Rossini’s vocally dazzling comedy stars bel canto sensation Juan Diego Flórez in the title role of this Met premiere production. He vies with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, in the trouser role of Isolier, for the love of the lonely Countess Adèle, sung by soprano Diana Damrau. Bartlett Sher, director of the Met’s hit productions of The Barber of Seville and The Tales of Hoffmann, describes the world of the opera as, “a place where love is dangerous. People get hurt. That can be very funny and very painful. Rossini captures both—with the most beautiful love music Rossini ever wrote.”
Maurizio Benini; Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, Susanne Resmark, Juan Diego Flórez, Stéphane Degout, Michele Pertusi

THE MAKROPULIS  CASE

LEOS JANACEK
Janaček is renowned for writing rich, complex roles for women, and no contemporary singer embodies them more brilliantly than Karita Mattila. Following her triumphs in the title roles of Jenůfa and Kát’a Kabanová, she turns her attention to the composer’s most intriguing creation, a seductive 19th-century singer whose long life and vitality can be traced to a startling secret. Mattila makes her role debut as the mysterious Emilia Marty in this powerful and provocative production.
The "charismatic and vocally gleaming Finnish soprano" (The New York Times) will reunite with Olivier Tambosi, director of her triumphant San Francisco Opera Manon Lescaut (2006). The outstanding cast will be conducted by the BBC Symphony’s Jiři Bělohlávek, an "authoritative" interpreter of Janaček’s music (The New York Times).

Sung in Czech with English supertitles Approximate running time: 2 hours, 30 minutes including one intermission Co-production with Finnish National Opera Production photos: Cory Weaver Audio credit: Audio excerpts are from the October 17, 1993 performance of The Makropulos Case with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra conducted by Charles Mackerras

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

Tonight's performance of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" (Salzburg Festival 2011) will be broadcast on ORF this coming Saturday (July 30). Members of the cast include Erwin Schrott as Figaro, & Simon Keenlyside as the Count. As many of you may already know, Schrott is married to soprano Anna Netrebko, and Keenlyside has appeared in numerous HD-transmissions LIVE from the Met, most notably in "Don Carlo" (Verdi) & singing the title role in "Hamlet" (Thomas).

Another "not-to-be-missed" performance can be heard on NPR's World of Opera which, this Saturday, features Verdi's "Rigoletto" from the Los Angeles Opera (November 2010). (www.wrti.org/) From this past October, the Belgian station Klara has a broadcast of Janacek's "Katya Kabanova" on tap, as performed in Brussels. (http://radio.klara.be/radio/10_home.php)

Some of the most intriguing items happen to be those of "vintage" status: For example, CBC Radio once again features a recording starring Canadian tenor Jon Vickers: This time, it's the 1978 recording of Britten's "Peter Grimes" -- a role which turned out to be a specialty for Vickers who sang it on various occasions at the Met and in London as well. (www.cbc.ca/radio2/)

Then there's a performance originating from January 21, 1957, of Robert Planquette's charming one-act opera from 1874: "Paille d'Avoine" -- It's another one of the series of operas that Radio France has kept stored away in its archives these past fifty years or so. (http://sites.radiofrance.fr/francemusique/accueil/)

Fans of soprano Renata Tebaldi, however, won't want to miss the Met radio broadcast from March 23, 1968, of Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" which Swedish Radio will be featuring this Saturday. Yes, I personally remember recording this exact performance on my old reel-to-reel tape recorder on that Saturday afternoon back in 1968 -- and loving every minute of it! (http://sverigesradio.se/p2/)
