This week on WSBE, Rhode Island Public Television:

TURANDOT

Maria Guleghina

Maria Guleghina asTurandot
Turandot, here played by Ukrainian soprano Maria Guleghina, has been called "Puccini's ice princess" for her penchant for beheading the male suitors who are unable to answer her riddles. Clearly, she is not in a hurry to marry.  Marcello Giordani is Calàf, the Persian prince who is determined to win her heart--and keep his head. This is Franco Zefferelli's opulent 1987 production. Also starring Marina Poplavskaya as Liù, the servant girl who is in love with Calàf, and Samuel Ramey as his father, the exiled King Timur. The opera is about the nastiest princess in all opera, but the music is nice.

Plácido Domingo gives voice and soul to Rigoletto, a court jester whose public ridicule of a nobleman brings with it a high price. Recorded in high definition in the Renaissance splendor of Mantua, Italy, the production transports you to the actual places and hours of the day specified in the libretto.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once again, Canada pays tribute to one of its most gifted singers -- tenor Jon Vickers -- by showcasing another one of his outstanding performances this Saturday (July 16), just as they did last week. This time, on CBC Radio 2, you can hear the 1972 recording of Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde" with Vickers as Tristan, a role that he sang to great acclaim both in North America and abroad.
(www.cbc.ca/radio2/)
Bringing us back into the present, BBC 3 will be broadcasting a LIVE performance (a London Proms concert, in fact) of Rossini's "William Tell" with Michele Pertusi in the title role. Pertusi, as some of you may recall, recently sang the part of the Tutor in the Met's HD-transmission of this same composer's "Le Comte Ory."
(www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/)
Another Rossini gem ("The Barber of Seville") can be heard on German Radio in a performance from Wiesbaden that took place on April 16 of this year.
(www.dradio.de/dkultur/)
Then, for the second week in a row, you can tune in to Daniel Catan's last completed opera -- "Il Postino" -- in its world premiere performance from last September, as done by the Los Angeles Opera, and with Placido Domingo creating one of the lead roles.
(www.wrti.org/)
In the meantime, for those of you who may be looking for an opera nobody's ever heard before (except, perhaps, a few of us fanatics): Check out "Le Paradis Perdu" ("Paradise Lost"), written in 1878 by Theodore Dubois. It's scheduled to be heard on French Radio, sometime tomorrow afternoon (July 14), in a LIVE performance from this summer Montpellier Festival. (Coming up later this month: Catel's 1802 opera "Semiramis" -- Where do they find them?)
Enjoy!
