OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

A live performance of Beethoven's "Fidelio" will be shown on the website of Munich's Bavarian Opera, some time on Friday afternoon (not sure of the exact time here on the East Coast of the U.S.).
Jonas Kaufmann is scheduled to appear as Florestan. Kaufmann was recently seen singing the role of Siegmund in the Met's recent HD-transmission of Wagner's "Die Walkure."

Check it out!
This coming Saturday afternoon (July 9) there are some very interesting items on tap, not the least of which is an opportunity to listen to what many people consider to be one of the best recordings of Verdi's "Otello" ever made: It's the 1973 recording featuring Jon Vickers as Otello, and with a huge amount of support from soprano Mirella Freni as Desdemona. This classic recording can be heard on CBC Radio.

Then there's a recent performance from Lyric Opera of Chicago of Handel's "Hercules" which sounds quite promising. It's a performance that took place this past Chicago, and it features the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the role of the vengeful Dejanira.

In a lighter vein, BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting a LIVE performance of Massenet's take on the Cinderella story: "Cendrillon" with Joyce Di Donato in the lead. Anyone who saw the recent HD-transmission from the Met of Rossini's "Le Comte Ory" may recall Di Donato's outstanding performance as the page Isolier in that opera. The Massenet work, however, is a Royal Opera House audio transmission, although there are some unsubstantiated rumors of a video being shown in some theatres at some point in the future. (More on that later, if it becomes available.)

"Il Postino" -- the final opera that the recently deceased Daniel Catan was able to complete -- can be heard in a June 20, 2011 performance from Paris, and features tenor Placido Domingo in the role which he himself created in the world premiere of this work last fall. People who usually shy away from contemporary works may give this one a listen, as Catan's music is very conservative, with melodic passages scattered throughout the score.

A more traditional work -- Verdi's "Nabucco" -- can be heard on ORF, in a performance by the Rome Opera House that took place on March 17 of this year. Baritone Leo Nucci -- probably best known for having sung the role of Rigoletto literally hundreds of times -- sings the title role in this one.

You'll have to wait till Sunday (the 10th) for this one, but it might be just the thing to pick up your spirits: A 1962 performance of Charles Lecocq's delightful 3-act operetta from 1879 -- "La Petite Mademoiselle" (Warning: It may take another 50 years before you ever get another chance to catch this one on the radio, folks!)

Lots to choose from, then -- So, ENJOY !!

DAVE
