OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

This Saturday, July 2, offers another interesting selection of operatic treats for our listening pleasure.

For example, NPR brings us a performance from last February of Wagner's "Lohengrin" (Lyric Opera of Chicago) featuring Johan Botha in the title role. This South African tenor was seen not so long ago singing the role of Radames when the Met transmitted a performance of Verdi's "Aida" at area movie theatres.

Perhaps even more popular than "Lohengrin" is the opera that is currently being performed at London's Royal Opera House and which can be heard this Saturday on BBC 3: Puccini's "Madame Butterfly."

Canadian Radio, on the other hand, will be broadcasting an opera of more recent vintage: "Nixon in China" by John Adams, as it was performed last February in Toronto by the Canadian Opera Company, and it offers a different cast from the one some of you may have seen in this season's live Met HD-transmission earlier this year.

Another "modern" classic -- Britten's "Peter Grimes" -- can be heard on Belgium's Klara radio station. The performance itself, from last summer, is by the Flemish Opera Company.

Very loosely based on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," there's Weber's "Oberon" coming to us on French Radio in a performance from Toulouse, originally heard on 4/22/11.

On an even lighter note, why not try Smetana's most popular opera -- "The Bartered Bride?" ORF will be broadcasting it on Saturday in a performance that originated in Graz.

Enjoy the music -- and have a great Fourth of July !!!
