Film Overview
"England was abuzz about more than the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William this month. In opera circles, the chatter was about barihunk Simon Keenlyside's long-awaited U.K. debut as the title character in Verdi's "Macbeth." Apparently, the always intense and vocally gifted singer didn't disappoint." To read Barihunks' full review, go to

About Macbeth
Verdi’s lifelong love affair with Shakespeare first took wing with Macbeth in 1847. The composer thought the play ‘one of the greatest creations of man’ and, along with his librettist Piave, set out to make of it, ‘something out of the ordinary’ on the operatic stage. Musically, Verdi’s masterstrokes were the macabre choruses for the witches, the evocative orchestral colours and the increased role for the ‘ugly and evil’ Lady Macbeth. Although Verdi later revised the opera in 1865 for Paris, his earlier, more unified version of the opera is used here for this revival of Phyllida Lloyd’s striking staging. Simon Keenlyside and Martina Serafin play the Scottish nobleman and his villainously ambitious wife, who spurs her husband to murder for the sake of his career, and American bass-baritone Raymond Aceto takes the role of Banquo, murder victim and symbol of conscience.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
Once again, opera on internet radio for this coming Saturday (June 11) offers an interesting variety of works to choose from, depending on one's taste or listening schedule.

Fans of Richard Wagner's operas can take in a performance from Berlin (6/3/11) of his universally acclaimed comic masterpiece "Die Meistersinger" to be heard on German Radio.

Fans of Giuseppe Verdi's operas, on the other hand, may choose to listen to "Un Ballo in Maschera" in a Lyric Opera of Chicago performance from last November, featuring Sondra Radvanovsky in the leading soprano role of Amelia.

Nothing for fans of Mozart, Puccini, and/or Donizetti, however -- but they might want to tune in to Bellini's "I Puritani" instead! This performance from Geneva, which took place this past January, can be heard on ORF.

Fans of Benjamin Britten's operas, though, get to hear his final operatic work -- "Death in Venice" -- on CBC Radio, as it was performed in Toronto last October.

A little bit off the beaten track, BBC Radio 3 delivers a performance from this past April of Rimsky-Korsakov's tragic opera "The Tsar's Bride" as performed at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Soprano Marina Poplavskaya (recently seen as Elizabeth in the Met's "Don Carlo") sings the title role.

Even farther off the beaten track, there's Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja's "The Ostrobothnians" courtesy of Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. You might want to tune in to this one this weekend, as the chances of this opera being broadcast ever again in either the near or distant future are "slim-to-none" (but don't bet on it!).

Enjoy!
