Rossini's comic--

LE
COMTE ORY

Rossini’s vocally dazzling comedy stars bel canto sensation Juan Diego Flórez in the title role of this Met premiere production. He vies with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, in the trouser role of Isolier, for the love of the lonely Countess Adèle, sung by soprano Diana Damrau. Bartlett Sher, director of the Met’s hit productions of The Barber of Seville and The Tales of Hoffmann, describes the world of the opera as, “a place where love is dangerous. People get hurt. That can be very funny and very painful. Rossini captures both—with the most beautiful love music Rossini ever wrote.”
Maurizio Benini; Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, Susanne Resmark, Juan Diego Flórez, Stéphane Degout, Michele Pertusi

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This coming Saturday (July 23), there are only a few "first-run" broadcasts scheduled, as most internet radio stations are offering "summer reruns" -- i.e. performances that have recently been broadcast already.
Mozart aficionados, however, have a chance to select from two of his operas:
From the Los Angeles Opera, Placido Domingo steps onto the podium to conduct a performance from last September of "The Marriage of Figaro."
(www.wrti.org/)
Then, the Belgian station Klara has on tap a performance from last November of Mozart's earlier comic opera "The Abduction from the Seraglio" as performed by the Flemish Opera.
(http://radio.klara.be/radio/10_home.php)
Then, CBC Radio 2 continues with its series of legendary performances featuring Canadian tenor Jon Vickers. This time, it's the 1969 recording of "The Trojans" which, in many ways, put this masterpiece of Hector Berlioz "on the map" since, up till then, a complete recording of this work had never been made, and actual performances were few and far between.
Also, you may want to check www.operacast.com this weekend for information on this summer's Bayreuth Festival, which begins next Monday (July 25) with Wagner's "Tannhauser." The premiere performances of each opera are usually broadcast, although I cannot find a specific broadcast schedule for this year's festival at the present time.
In the meantime -- Enjoy!
DAVE
