OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

The first Saturday of the New Year brings us a LIVE matinee broadcast from the Met of Verdi's "Otello." Scheduled to sing the title role is tenor Stuart Skelton, with soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Desdemona and baritone Zeljko Lucic as Iago.

On the other hand, you can catch a LIVE broadcast from Warsaw of Polish composer Stanislaw Moniuszko's most famous opera "Halka" (premiered in 1854).

At the same time, Radio 3 (RAI) is transmitting a performance from June 2018 of Pietro Mascagni's most famous work: "Cavalleria Rusticana." This particular broadcast from Palermo is noteworthy, however, in bringing us a rare opportunity to hear one of the few non-operatic works ever composed by Mascagni. Actually it's a very early example of film music; in this case, the composer ended up writing the music for the silent film "Rapsodia Satanica" which was produced in 1915.

Two opera broadcasts worth mentioning on Sunday (Jan. 6) are the LIVE video-stream from Munich of Bedrich Smetana's most famous opera "The Bartered Bride" + the December 12, 2018 performance from Paris of Ambroise Thomas's "Hamlet."

Enjoy! -- And Happy New Year !!

DAVE
