ADRIANA LECOUVREUR
“A pinnacle
of a lifetime of opera-going … Anna Netrebko is the ultimate diva” (Observer)
in the title role of the real-life French actress who dazzled 18th-century
audiences with her on- and offstage passion. The soprano is joined by tenor Piotr
Beczała, “in sterling form” (Financial Times) as Adriana’s lover, Maurizio, as
well as the “stupendous” (New York Times) mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili
and baritone Ambrogio Maestri. Gianandrea Noseda conducts. Sir David McVicar’s
engrossing new staging sets the action in a working replica of a Baroque
theater.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
With a
high-powered cast (Anna Netrebko, Piotr Beczala, & Anita Rachvelishvili)
scheduled to appear in Saturday afternoon's HD-transmission of Cilea's
"Adriana Lecourveur" in local movie theatres, it's safe to predict
that many opera-lovers will be attending or listening in on internet radio,
with several internet radio stations transmitting the audio of that
performance. And why not? Beautiful music, beautiful voices, what's not to
like?
As usual,
there are a few other upcoming broadcasts worth mentioning, one of which would
be tomorrow's broadcast on Radio 3 (RAI) of Puccini's "Madame
Butterfly." This LIVE performance is coming to us, direct from Turin.
Then at 7:25
that evening, the Met will be offering a free LIVE audio-stream of Verdi's
"Otello."
For those
who may not be interested in the "Adriana Lecouvreur" offering on
Saturday, you may want to tune in to German Radio for a delayed broadcast from
Copenhagen of Beethoven's "Fidelio." The performance itself will be
taking place tomorrow (Jan. 10).
Also on
Saturday: While many opera-lovers are familiar with Ponchielli's "La
Gioconda" which has often been performed at the Met and many other major
opera houses worldwide over the years, a performance of his opera "I
Lituani" ("The Lithuanians") is something of a rarity. And so,
interested listeners can treat themselves to a 2009 performance of this 1874
opera from (where else?) Vilnius (Lithuania).
Finally,
fans of Debussy's "Pelleas & Melisande" will want to mark their
calendars for next Tuesday's LIVE audio-stream from the Met at 7:25 pm, as
soprano Isabel Leonard sings the role of Melisande in this beautiful
atmospheric work.
Enjoy!
DAVE
