OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Aside from
some repeat broadcasts from the past several months, there are at least 3
noteworthy "new" broadcasts worth mentioning, coming up on the
schedule for this Saturday (July 21), one of them being the June 17 performance
of "Don Giovanni" that is being broadcast on German Radio. This one
originally took place in Wiesbaden.
There's also
the March 20 performance of Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini" which took
place in Paris and which can be heard on ORF (Austria). Soprano Pretty Yende
sings the role of Teresa in this one.
And of
special interest to French opera-lovers, as well as those of us with a taste
for the obscure works of the 19th century, there's a LIVE broadcast from this
summer's opera festival in Montpellier of the final opera of Leo Delibes (best
known by opera fans as the composer of "Lakme"). Although the
composer passed away in 1891 before having completed "Kassya" (the
work in question), Jules Massenet stepped in to provide the finishing touches
(so to speak) to allow the work to be premiered in 1893. After languishing in
total obscurity since then, we now get a chance to hear a work which is
essentially a Delibes/Massenet opera! Not a bad combination, IMHO!
Enjoy!
DAVE
