Birgit Nilsson at 100: The Six Roles That
Defined Her Career
This coming
Saturday (May 19), there are some interesting choices on hand for opera
listeners. Of course, there's yet another broadcast of Puccini's "La
Boheme." This enormously popular opera can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI) in a
LIVE performance from Venice.
If the music of Richard Wagner happens to be high on your list of favorites, you may want to listen in to the LIVE performance from Helsinki of "Parsifal."
A bit of Verdi perhaps? ORF (Austria) will be broadcasting the May 13th performance from Vienna of "Simon Boccanegra" with baritone Thomas Hampson in the title role.
There's even some 20th century opera on hand on Saturday as BBC Radio 3 brings us a performance from last month of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District." Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek takes on the role of Katerina in this Royal Opera House production, with tenor Brandon Jovanovich as her "love-interest" Sergei.
One of the many operas of Handel also appears on Saturday's schedule, as German Radio offers a broadcast of last Saturday's performance of "Arminio" (1736), direct from Gottingen.
Then on Sunday (May 20), French Radio has scheduled a LIVE performance from Paris of Debussy's lovely and atmospheric "Pelleas & Melisande."
What! No Mozart? Well, wait till next week, and one of his masterpieces may possibly be on the schedule at that time.
Enjoy!
