Although the
series of Saturday matinee broadcasts from the Met are now ended
until next December, there are still plenty of other broadcasts worth listening
to and, in some cases, watching. One of these worth mentioning is the RAI
broadcast tomorrow(Thursday) of Nino Rota's "The Florentine Straw
Hat" (1955). Yes, this is the same Nino Rota who gave us some outstanding
movie soundtracks ("Romeo & Juliet" from the 60s, "The
Godfather") and who collaborated with Federico Fellini in a number of
Italian-language films which American movie-goers became familiar with as well,
assuming titles like "8 1/2" & "La Strada" mean
anything to those of us "of a certain age." In any case, tomorrow's performance
of the Rota opera comes to us, direct from Naples.

Then on Saturday (May 12), fans of Roberto Alagna and/or Elina Garanca will probably be thrilled to learn that they can listen to a LIVE broadcast on ORF from the Vienna State Opera of Saint-Saens's most famous opera "Samson & Dalila."
BBC Radio 3 brings us another popular favorite, this one coming to us from Opera North (Leeds). It's Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera."
More Verdi is on tap when RAI brings us yet another broadcast: "Aida" can be heard on this Italian radio station in a performance that will be taking place in Bologna.
If you'd prefer to watch an opera instead, OperaVision will be providing us with a video-stream from Berlin of Handel's 1744 "Semele" which can be viewed for several weeks afterwards as well as on Saturday.
Two more opera broadcasts become available on internet radio on Sunday (May 13), one of which is the 3rd RAI broadcast. Bellini's "Norma" is the one on RAI's schedule, as performed in Venice. The "big news" probably concerns the fact that Norma is being sung by soprano Mariella Devia, and yes, this is the same woman who made her debut in Italy in the title role of "Lucia di Lammermoor" back in 1973 (!!!) Ms Devia, recently turned 70 last month, apparently still has what it takes -- one of those singers (like Domingo) who has brought so much pleasure to so many opera fans for so many years!
Coming to us from Melbourne is a performance of Massenet's "Don Quichotte" which can be heard on ABC Classic FM (also on Sunday).

Enjoy!
