OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (August 2), there are actually TWO performances of Benjamin Britten's "Billy Budd" on the schedule. German Radio has it, the performance being one that took place in Berlin just last month (June 6, 2014), while a performance from Los Angeles can be accessed on NPR, that performance having originally taken place this past February/March.

Mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch -- seen as Charlotte in the Met's HD-transmission of Massenet's "Werther" earlier this year -- takes on the role of Octavian in what is probably the most popular opera of Richard Strauss: "Der Rosenkavalier." The performance to be broadcast on Saturday is actually the one that will be performed on Friday (August 1) as part of this summer's Salzburg Festival.

Every summer -- usually around this time of the season -- several operas by Rossini are performed in Pesaro (his birthplace). A performance from LAST summer, however, is on tap on Swedish Radio. It's the August 10, 2013 performance of his delightful comic opera "L'Italiana in Algeri."

Enjoy!

Labor Struggles at Metropolitan Opera Have a Past

...Now, after three relatively quiet decades, the Met is on the brink of its worst labor crisis in years: Peter Gelb, the Met’s general manager, is threatening to lock out the company’s orchestra, chorus, stage crews and other workers on Friday, endangering the coming opera season, if they do not agree to new contracts with cuts to their pay and benefits
