PRINCE IGOR - Borodin's defining Russian epic, famous for its Polovtsian Dances, comes to the Met for the first time in nearly 100 years. Dmitri Tcherniakov's new production is a psychological journey through the mind of its conflicted hero, with the founding of the Russian nation as the backdrop. Star bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov takes on the monumental title role, with Gianandrea Noseda conducting.

Verdi’s towering masterpiece, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy, makes its first Live in HD appearance. Semyon Bychkov conducts an extraordinary cast led by Johan Botha in the title role of the jealous Moor of Venice, opposite Renée Fleming in one of her greatest roles, Otello’s innocent wife Desdemona. Falk Struckmann sings Iago, Otello’s disloyal ensign, and Michael Fabiano is the captain Cassio.

The Enchanted Island

A contemporary take on the 18th-century genre of the pastiche, this delightful Baroque fantasy brings together some of the greatest arias and ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Purcell, and other composers, with a new English libretto by Jeremy Sams, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The all-star cast is headed by David Daniels as Prospero, Joyce DiDonato as Sycorax, Danielle de Niese as Ariel, Luca Pisaroni as Caliban, and the legendary Plácido Domingo as Neptune. William Christie conducts this dazzling world-premiere production.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET

A couple of operas by Giuseppe Verdi -- one early, one late -- appear on this Saturday's opera schedule (July 12). The early work happens to be "I Due Foscari" which has been performed rather frequently as of late, probably due to the advocacy of tenor/baritone Placido Domingo who takes on the role of the elder of the two Foscari in the current performance being broadcast on Swedish Radio, originally having taken place in Vienna this past January.

The second Verdi opera is his final masterpiece -- "Falstaff" -- heard this Saturday on NPR as the first in a series of broadcasts from the Los Angeles Opera's 2013/2014 season. This particular performance took place in November 2013.

A double-bill appears on the schedule of Radio 3 (RAI), the two operas being Zemlinsky's "A Florentine Tragedy" and Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi." These 2 works were performed in Turin this past March.

In a rather "jazzy" vein, Ernst Krenek's 1927 opera "Johnny Spielt Auf" ("Johnny Acts Up") can be heard on German Radio. The performance being aired took place in Weimar on May 29, 2014.

Wagner enthusiasts, no doubt, have already heard this next one, at least once in their lifetime: It's the 1966 broadcast of "Tristan & Isolde" from the Bayreuth Festival, with a stunning cast which includes Wolfgang Windgassen (Tristan), Birgit Nilsson (Isolde), Christa Ludwig (Brangane), Eberhard Wachter (Kurvenal), & Martti Talvela (King Marke). Be prepared to be blown away by this one !!!

I should also mention a couple of upcoming opera broadcasts from BBC's Radio 3, although one of them will take place on Monday (July 14) & the other one on next Wednesday (July 16). The Monday broadcast is Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda" from London's Royal Opera House. This LIVE performance features Joyce Di Donato who (it seems) practically owns this role, as of late!

Then, on Wednesday, it's "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss. This, too, is a Royal Opera House performance, and it stars soprano Karita Mattila.

Gounod’s ultra-sensual interpretation of Shakespeare also features Nathan Gunn as Mercutio and Plácido Domingo on the podium.

  • La Fanciulla del West

    Puccini’s musical vision of the American West is vividly brought to life in the Met’s atmospheric production. Deborah Voigt is Minnie, the “girl of the golden west” and owner of a bar in a Californian mining camp. Marcello Giordani sings Dick Johnson, the bandit-turned-lover hunted by the cynical sheriff Jack Rance (Lucio Gallo), who wants Minnie for himself. Complete with whiskey-drinking cowboys, gunplay, a poker game, and a snowstorm, La Fanciulla del West is Puccini at his most colorful.
