OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Some
excellent "late" Verdi turns up on the opera schedule for this coming
Saturday (June 30), namely "Aida" & "Falstaff."
The
"Aida" performance is one that took place this past January and is a
continuation of the cycle of Lyric Opera of Chicago radio broadcasts being aired
by NPR. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky sings the role of Aida, partnered with
Marcello Giordani as Radames. Both singers are veterans of fairly recent Met
HD-transmissions, with Ms Radvanovsky having appeared singing the role of
Leonora in last season's "Trovatore" & Giordani recently starring
in "Ernani" (televised last Sunday on Channel 2).

London's
Royal Opera House is the company serving us the other Verdi offering:
"Falstaff" with an excellent ensemble cast working to bring this
comic masterpiece to life.

Speaking
of masterpieces, "Lucia di Lammermoor" (Donizetti) will be heard in a
LIVE performance on ORF, direct from the Vienna State Opera. Tenor Piotr
Beczala -- recently seen at the Met as Des Grieux opposite Anna Netrebko in
Massenet's "Manon" -- sings the tenor role of Edgardo. Soprano Diana
Damrau, originally slated to sing the title role, is being replaced by Brenda
Rae, according to the latest information I have at hand.

For
this week's obscure opera, there's Czech composer Zdenek Fibich's
"Sarka" in a performance from Braunschweig that took place on March
22 of this year. Traditional-minded opera-lovers may rest assured that Fibich's
opera, premiering in the 1890s, is suitably melodic and dramatic in a style
reminiscent of Dvorak's nearly contemporaneous opera "Rusalka."

Enjoy!
