OPERA ON THE INTERNET

WITH

DAVE  D' AGUANNO

A couple of well-known operas, plus 3 noteworthy rarities, appear on the internet radio schedule for this coming Saturday (June 9).

Probably the most popular of the operas being broadcast this Saturday is Verdi's "Rigoletto" which can be heard on BBC Radio 3 in a performance that took place this past March at London's Royal Opera House. For those of you who saw this recently on the screen of the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, you'll be pleased to know that the identical cast is featured on Saturday's radio broadcast.

Perhaps not as popular as "Rigoletto" but relatively familiar to many opera-goers, "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss will be heard on NPR stations, coming to us from Lyric Opera of Chicago (November 2011) and featuring Deborah Voigt in the dual role of the Prima Donna & Ariadne.

Radio 4 (the Netherlands) is giving enthusiastic fans of opera from the 1700s a chance to hear "Rosamunde" -- premiered in Mannheim in 1780 & written by Anton Schweitzer. The performance heard Saturday was originally taped on May 25, & comes to us from this year's Schwetzingen Festival.

Tchaikovsky's early & obscure opera "The Voyevode" ("The Watchman") (1869) is on hand on French Radio, via a live performance that was given in Moscow on April 20 of this year.

Plus, we get a rare opportunity to hear a Massenet opera that has totally disappeared from the standard repertory: his final opera "Cleopatre" (1912) can be heard this week on ORF.

Enjoy!
