ANNA BOLENA FROM THE TEATRO DEL MAGGIO MUSICALE FIORENTINO
OVERVIEW
Anna Bolena
From the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
220 minutes
Envelope-pushing director Graham Vick describes his
production of Anna Bolena as two
women making use of the bed to get to the throne and a man making use of the
throne to get to the bed. The
man, of course, is Henry the 8th, and the women are his doomed wives, Jane
Seymour and Anne Boleyn. Don't miss this tale of treachery and scandal, brought
to life in Donizetti's sparkling score..From the Teatro del Maggio Musicale
Fiorentino, Italy
About Maggio Musicale Fiorentino:Founded in 1933, Maggio
Musicale Fiorentino is one of the oldest music festivals in Italy, and one of
the most famous. It features opera, concerts, ballet and exhibitions at
Florence's Teatro Comunale (or Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino) and
Teatro Goldoni.
This performance has been captured live.
Note: This production is performed with piano, not orchestra, due to an orchestral strike.

Synopsis: Carmen
is the story of fatal attraction between Carmen, the hot-blooded gypsy, and Don
José, the upstanding corporal in the Spanish army who’s already engaged to
another woman. Don José begins to fall for Carmen as she sings the famous song
of seduction, the Habañera. When he helps her avoid arrest, he is thrown in
prison. Upon his release, he seeks her out; as a result, his life continues to
unravel. Upon hearing his mother is dying, he heads home, vowing to Carmen that
they will be together again soon. When he returns, he discovers Carmen in a
rapturous affair with Escamillo, a dashing toreador. Don José, now bitter and
angry, stabs her to death just as Escamillo wins the fight in the bullring. As
the spectators leave the arena, Don José throws himself on her dead body and
confesses his guilt.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
For those of you who have been longing all these years
for an opera to be written about Marilyn Monroe, your wait is finally over! On
this coming Saturday (June 16), Radio 4 will be broadcasting a LIVE performance
of composer Robin de Raaff's new opera "Waiting for Miss Monroe" as
part of this year's Holland Festival in Amsterdam. Can an opera about Jayne
Mansfield be too far behind???
For more conservative-minded listeners, Puccini's
"La Boheme" would probably be considered a safe bet. BBC Radio 3 has
it, in a recent performance from London's Royal Opera House. Singing the tenor
role of Rodolfo is Joseph Calleja, a Met "veteran" who was seen &
heard not too long ago in HD-transmissions of Donizetti's "Lucia di
Lammermoor" & Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann."
Another so-called safe bet would be Verdi's "Don
Carlo." This is yet another LIVE performance from the Vienna State Opera
(on ORF) & featuring bass Rene Pape as King Philip. Pape's most recent
appearance in a Met HD-transmission was as Mephistopheles in last December's
presentation of Gounod's "Faust."
In a somewhat lighter vein, you might want to tune in
to NPR for the latest installment of operas that were performed at the Lyric
Opera of Chicago this past season. This week, it's "Showboat" by
Jerome Kerns, with an exceptional cast headed by baritone Nathan Gunn (Mercutio
in the Met's "Romeo & Juliette" a few seasons back).
Enjoy!
