OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
With mostly "repeats" taking up lots of room
on internet radio stations' schedules, this coming Saturday (July 7) can still
boast a few new & interesting items.
Fans of Bizet's "Carmen" can rejoice over
yet another performance of this classic. This time around, it's a LIVE
performance from Lyons, via French Radio.
NPR begins its series of broadcasts from Los Angeles
Opera's 2011/2012 season with last September's "Eugene Onegin"
(Tchaikovsky).
Then there's Detlev Glanert's 2006 opera
"Caligula" on BBC Radio 3 in an English National Opera performance
from this past May. Although it is definitely a product of its time (i.e. don't
expect it to sound like Mozart, Verdi, or Puccini), it has several impressive
moments, notably an intense orchestral intermezzo after Act 1. In fact, I
happen to have its premiere performance (from Frankfurt, 2006) on CD, have
heard it a couple of times, & consider it one of the best operas of the
21st century! (Just my opinion, of course -- Others may feel quite differently
about it).

In the meantime, I hope everyone's having a safe &
happy Fourth of July !!!
DAVE
