DAVE D' AGUANNO
Aside
from several re-broadcasts of performances from earlier this year, the schedule
for this coming Saturday (July 21) includes a few "new" items of
interest.
Mozart
enthusiasts, for example, can listen to a LIVE performance from Bamberg of his
masterpiece "Cosi fan Tutte" (to be heard on German Radio).
NPR,
continuing its series of broadcasts from the 2011/2012 season at Los Angeles Opera,
this week brings us Gounod's "Romeo & Juliette" which was
performed there in November of last year. Those of you who may have recently
seen operas at the Cable Car Cinema will, no doubt, rejoice over the
opportunity to hear tenor Vittorio Grigolo in the role of Romeo, as he was the
lead tenor in recent videos of Gounod's "Faust" & Verdi's
"Rigoletto" (both from London).
French
Radio is featuring one of the lesser-known operas of Massenet. The opera in
question is "Therese" and, in case all you know of Massenet is
"Manon" and/or "Thais", you may be surprised to find that
"Therese" is taut (a little over an hour long) & intensely
dramatic, especially in its last ten minutes or so. (Of course, nearly everybody
dies or is killed in this one!)

AUDITIONS!
Come sing with us!
If you are an experienced choral singer, sign up for an audition
on August 29th or September 5th by sending an email to info@ricco.org or by
phoning (401) 521-5670. This season, we'll be singing Vivaldi's Gloria and
Britten's St. Nicolas in November; Part's Te Deum and Schubert's Mass No. 3 in
Bb Major in March; and various works by Beethoven in May.
We rely on your generosity!
Your gift will help bring to life the choral works of musical
masters such as Mozart, Bach, Handel, and Haydn, as well as musical premieres from
young contemporary composers, and works that have never been performed in Rhode
Island, like Sir Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time. Your contribution also
helps to support educational initiatives like our Annual Collegiate Vocal Solo
Competition which provides the opportunity for young classical singers to
perform as soloists with a large chorus and
professional orchestra.

OVERVIEW
Norma is considered Vincenzo Bellinis magnum opus, and the apex of the bel canto operatic style. The titular high priestess is filled with treasonous desire for a Roman soldier, forcing her to choose between duty and love. Flowing, lyrical melodies including the infamously difficult soprano aria Casta Diva only add to the passion and heartbreak. Starring Chiara Taigi, Gregory Kunde, Irina Lungu and Giacomo Prestia. From stunning outdoor arena stage at the Teatro Antico Taormina, Italy.
