OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

For many of us, the big news this week is the upcoming LIVE HD-transmission from the Met on Saturday, bringing us Massenet's "Manon" starring soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Michael Fabiano. As usual, this can be seen at selected movie theatres in your area.

In fact, there's even more Massenet on tap for this coming Saturday, as BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting a performance of "Werther" from London's Royal Opera House. Tenor Juan Diego Florez can be heard in the title role, with Isabel Leonard as Charlotte.

There's also a September 2019 performance on Saturday of the French-language version of Verdi's "Don Carlos" in a production from Antwerp which can be heard on the Belgian Radio station Klara.

Then on Sunday, interested opera lovers will be given a chance to listen to an opera that has a DOG as the leading character! Who else but Offenbach would even consider such a thing? Well, it's obviously one of his many comic operas, and the title -- "Barkouf" (1860)-- refers to the dog himself -- Have no fear: The dog doesn't actually "sing" in this one, although he does do some barking. In any case, you can hear it in a performance that took place earlier this month in Cologne.

Even before all of the above, Friday (October 25) is chock-full of operatic treats in a something-for-everybody manner. First off, in case you were ever interested in hearing what the first Estonian opera ever written sounded like, you'll get your chance on Friday as Aav Evald's "The Vikings" (1928) will be broadcast, direct from Tallinn.

On Friday evening at 7:25, the Met is offering yet another FREE live audio-stream. This time around, it's Puccini's "La Boheme."

Also on Friday, the free opera video channel OperaVision is planning on showing TWO operas. First, there's Bizet's "Carmen" from Beijing followed by Johann Strauss's "Die Fledermaus" from Vienna. But that's only the beginning, since OperaVision will continue on Saturday with a video-stream of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" from Rome, and then on Sunday, it's Rossini's "Barber of Seville" from Santiago. -- And who was it that said opera was dead???

Enjoy!

DAVE
