Tosca
Sir David
McVicar’s bold new staging of Tosca, Puccini’s operatic thriller of Napoleonic
Rome, thrilled Met audiences when it rang in the New Year in 2018. Only weeks
later, the production was seen by opera lovers worldwide as part of the Met’s
Live in HD series of cinema presentations. In this performance, Bulgarian
soprano Sonya Yoncheva is the passionate title diva, opposite charismatic tenor
Vittorio Grigolo as her lover, the idealistic painter Mario Cavaradossi.
Baritone Željko Lučić is the menacing Baron Scarpia, the evil chief of police
who employs brutal tactics to ensnare both criminals and sexual conquests. On
the podium, Emmanuel Villaume conducts the electrifying score, which features
some of Puccini’s most memorable melodies. Isabel Leonard hosts.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
A few weeks
ago, Swedish Radio aired a LIVE broadcast from Stockholm of Franz Schreker's
"Der Ferne Klang" ("The Distant Sound"), and this coming
Saturday (October 19) this same opera can be seen, again LIVE from Stockholm,
on OperaVision. At the time he wrote them (the early decades of the 20th
century) Schreker's operas were quite popular -- until the Nazis came along and
banned his music, due to the fact that he was part-Jewish. Erich Korngold and
Walter Braunfels (to name 2 others) also suffered the same fate. Fortunately,
now that we're well into the 21st century, their music can once again be
appreciated, even if their operas never get a chance to enter the standard
repertory.
Lovers of
music from the Baroque period will be happy to encounter 2 separate broadcasts
on Saturday afternoon, one of which is the April 23, 2019 performance from
Venice of Vivaldi's "Dorilla in Tempe" (premiered in 1726), which can
be heard on Radio 3 (RAI).
Then on BBC
Radio 3, Joyce Di Donato can be heard in the title role of Handel's
"Agrippina" (1710) which was performed quite recently in London's
Royal Opera House.
Enjoy!
DAVE
