OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

The first LIVE HD-transmission of the Met's 2019/2020 season comes to us this Saturday (Oct. 12), with Puccini's "Turandot." Soprano Christine Goerke takes on the challenging title role in this not-to-be-missed performance, especially for fans of Puccini's final opera, as shown in various local movie theatres.

In fact, the Met also has more Puccini in store for us. Besides the "Turandot" HD-transmission, there's a FREE live audio-stream of "Madame Butterfly" which can be heard on Friday evening at 7:25.

Gasparo Spontini, an exact contemporary of Rossini, composed a number of operas which, in their day, were wildly popular and, in fact, lavishly praised and adored by none other than French composer Hector Berlioz. One of these works -- "Fernand Cortez" (1809) -- can be heard this Saturday on Radio 3 (RAI) in a LIVE performance from Florence.

Also on Saturday, German Radio has scheduled the September 26th performance from the Bolshoi of Rimsky-Korsakov's fairy tale opera "The Tale of Tsar Saltan." If you happen to listen in to this delightful work, don't be surprised if you hear some familiar music in the scene where the young hero is magically transformed into a bumble-bee so that he can fly over & "sting" the "bad guys" (cue: "The Flight of the Bumble-Bee").

Then on Sunday (Oct. 13), OperaVision is offering a FREE live video-stream from Berlin of Hans Werner Henze's "The Bassarids" (premiered in 1966) in which one of the main characters ends up being torn to pieces -- literally! (And they say modern-day movies and video games are too violent!). However, such savagery is to be expected, since the work is based on the Euripides Greek tragedy "The Bacchae."

For those opera buffs who prefer their operatic mayhem clothed in a more conventional manner, you can hear a LIVE performance of Verdi's opera "Attila" on BR Klassik, as performed in Munich (also on Sunday).

Enjoy!

DAVE
