OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Perhaps many
opera fans are not aware of the fact that the German-French composer Jacques
Offenbach was born 200 years ago tomorrow (i.e. June 20, 1819), so it is not
surprising that this well-loved composer's music is getting some worthwhile
attention this month with THREE of his full-length works being broadcast on the
internet in the next few days, beginning on Friday (June 21) with a LIVE
performance from Cologne of his infrequently performed "Fantasio"
which premiered in 1872. If you happen to listen in to Friday's performance,
you may be somewhat taken aback to hear a bit of music which is familiar to
many of us, as it was later re-used in his opera "The Tales of
Hoffmann."
On Sunday,
there are actually two of his works being broadcast. One of them might be
somewhat familiar, since over the years there have been a few recordings and
radio broadcasts. That would be "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein"
from 1867. A performance of this work from earlier this month took place in
Cologne and is the one that can be heard on Sunday.
How about
"Maitre Peronilla" (1878)? This Sunday is your chance to hear this
rarity as performed in Paris on June 1st of this year.
Aside from
the Offenbach items listed above, Radio Classique has a LIVE performance of Mozart's
"Don Giovanni" -- direct from Paris on Friday.
Another
all-time favorite -- Puccini's "Tosca" -- is also being broadcast
LIVE on Friday, this one coming to us from Barcelona.
Plus,
Saturday afternoon brings us yet another rarity, not by Offenbach, however.
It's Alberic Magnard's "Guercoeur" (1900), which can be heard on
German Radio in a June 15th performance from Osnabruck. Incidentally, Magnard
might have left us more wonderful music to enjoy -- that is, if he hadn't been
killed in 1914 at the age of 49 while trying to defend his property against the
Germans in World War I.
Enjoy!
DAVE
