OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
Opera-lovers
can jump-start their opera-listening during the next few days by checking out
the LIVE broadcast on Thursday (March 7) of "Hamlet" by Ambroise
Thomas. Featuring soprano Diana Damrau in the role of Ophelia, this performance
comes to us from Barcelona.
Also on
Thursday, starting at 7:25 p.m., the FREE live audio-stream being given by the
Met this week is of Verdi's "Aida" with soprano Sondra Radvanovsky in
the title role.
Then on
Friday, there are actually 2 opera broadcasts on the schedule. Fans of the
music of Donizetti can listen to a LIVE performance from Genoa of his comic
opera "Don Pasquale." (This one may actually be available as a
video-stream, although the link provided doesn't specifically mention that.)
The other
Friday broadcast is on Swedish Radio and brings us what amounts to the world
premiere performance of Elfrida Andree's opera "Fritiof's Saga."
Although she wrote the opera in 1899, it has never been performed in its
entirety (although excerpts have surfaced from time to time), so this
performance from Gothenburg is the first COMPLETE performance this opera has
ever had.
If you were
fortunate enough to experience the delightful "Daughter of the
Regiment" performance from the Met last Saturday, and are yearning to hear
this opera once again, you're in luck: Radio 3 (RAI) will be broadcasting the
opera in a LIVE performance from Bologna on Saturday.
If you
happen to prefer Wagner to Donizetti, there's the LIVE matinee broadcast from
the Met of "Das Rheingold" (available on several internet radio
stations).
On the other
hand, if your tastes encompass 21st century works, it's likely you'd want to
listen in to the LIVE broadcast from Amsterdam of "Girls of the Golden
West" by John Adams. The opera itself received its world premiere
performances back in November 2017 in San Francisco.
Then on
Sunday, French Radio is broadcasting a January 2019 performance from Paris of
Berlioz's monumental "Les Troyens."
Enjoy!
DAVE
