OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

Quite a few interesting operatic treats coming up for us in the next few days, starting tomorrow (Thursday) with 2 opera broadcasts that are bound to please most opera fans. One is the LIVE broadcast from Brussels of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" which can be heard on the Belgian radio station Klara.

Or if you prefer something by Verdi instead, there's a LIVE broadcast from Parma of "Macbeth" which can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI).

On Friday, the 1st of 2 OperaVision video-streams will be available for our viewing pleasure. It's a LIVE performance from Riga of Wagner's "Flying Dutchman."

The 2nd video-stream on OperaVision will become available on Sunday (Sept. 30), as Erich Korngold's opera "Die Tote Stadt" (1920) can be seen, as performed in Berlin.

Saturday afternoon brings us yet another Mozart opera -- "Cosi fan Tutte" -- which can be heard on NPR in a performance that took place in Philadelphia's Academy of Vocal Arts in 2007.

Heinrich Marschner's "Der Vampyr" can be heard on Swedish Radio. If the music in this one sounds like a cross between Weber and Wagner, you wouldn't be alone in thinking that, since many musical historians see his operas as a vital link between those 2 more popular composers. The performance being broadcast comes from Lidkoping.

At the same time, German Radio is giving us a rare opportunity to hear Czech composer Leopold Kozeluch's 1792 opera "Gustav Vasa" which was performed in Helsinki on March 10 of this year. This is the only Kozeluch opera you'll probably ever hear since most of his more than 400 compositions (!!!) are very rarely performed these days.

Then on Sunday, the OperaVision video-stream of Korngold's "Die Tote Stadt" will be getting some competition from the Bavarian Opera in Munich which is giving us a FREE live video-stream of Wagner's "Die Meistersinger." Since the Korngold opera will be available for months afterwards, the Wagner work may be a wise choice in this instance.

Then, if you're in the mood for more Verdi, the Met is making available to us a FREE live audio-stream on Tuesday (October 2) at 7:25 pm of "Aida." With a starry cast which includes soprano Anna Netrebko as Aida & mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili as Amneris, this one's bound to be one you might not want to miss!

Enjoy!

DAVE
