OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO
This coming
Friday (September 21), Britten fans can watch the video-stream being presented
on OperaVision of "Albert Herring." Although known primarily for his
serious operas (for instance, "Peter Grimes" & "Billy
Budd"), this particular opera, written soon after "Peter
Grimes", represents a rare instance of this British composer venturing
into the realm of comic opera -- something which Verdi did on only 2 occasions,
as he did in "Il Giorno di Regno" and "Falstaff." The
performance to be shown on Friday dates back to July 2015, and the performers
are members of the Royal College of Music.
Speaking of
"Falstaff" -- Saturday afternoon's broadcast from London's Royal
Opera is the July 19, 2018 performance of this Verdi work. With Bryn Terfel as
Falstaff and Simon Keenlyside as Ford, it's being broadcast on Radio 3 (BBC).
Another
Italian opera -- one that was written shortly before Verdi's masterpiece -- is
Mascagni's "L'Amico Fritz." As with the Britten and Verdi operas
mentioned above, this relatively early piece is a somewhat rare example of
Mascagni's comic opera writing. You can hear it this Saturday on NPR, as
performed in Philadelphia (2005).
A couple of
rarely performed 20th century operas also appear on Saturday afternoon's
schedule, with Polish Radio bringing us a performance from Warsaw of Karol
Szymanowski's one-act opera "Hagith." Although written in 1913, the
opera had to wait nearly a decade before it was actually performed, with the
"powers-that-be" at the time having a problem with what they referred
to as the composer's "homosexual lifestyle." In any case, the work
has never been performed with the same regularity as his later opera "King
Roger" which many consider to be one of the greatest Polish operas ever
written.
Then there's
Gosta Nystroem's 1958 opera "Herr Arnes Penningar" which Swedish
Radio has on its schedule. The performance being broadcast comes from a
Goteborg concert which took place on April 23, 1917.
Enjoy!
